About me

I have been practicing as a psychotherapist, counsellor and supervisor for over 30 years, also as a trainer in counselling, assertiveness and communication skills.
Previous to that I was a teacher working in schools and the community, the fringes of education, special needs, adult literacy, numeracy, second language, family work (parents and pre-school children).
I loved this work but had a strong desire to develop my knowledge and deepen my experience and so I decided to retrain to be a psychotherapist.
My journey as a psychotherapist has also been a very personal one. Originally in therapy myself, I found such benefits that I decided that this was what I wanted to do professionally.
Through my own development and working with people of all ages and in different situations for 37 years or more, I both know and believe that we can influence and improve the quality of our own lives and our relationships, to ourselves and others.
We want to be challenged and to learn new things, including managing our feelings, thoughts and behaviours in order to experience ourselves as less helpless and more in charge of our lives, and more able to make good choices.
One way of influencing patterns of behaviour that don't work for us any more is by doing certain simple exercises which help in learning ways to regulate ourselves under stress, reduce symptoms and feelings of helplessness and organise a more emotionally integrated way of acting and living our lives
This belief was confirmed for me when I observed my four month old granddaughter and saw the enormous effort she put into growing and developing, and the excitement she showed in achieving the next move.
It is a great satisfaction to me to see people I see learn to be more curious than judgmental about themselves, work with change and be excited in achieving a change of behaviour, a different way of seeing a situation and finding new ways of expressing themselves, to themselves and in their relationships, be they partner/spouse, son/daughter friend or colleague.

Sometimes we just don't know how to make the changes that can give us a more satisfying or happy life.

I have always been interested in how the body talks to itself and have over many years deepened my knowledge and experience in this area. To this end I have over the past 28 years been strongly influenced personally and professionally by Formative Psychology as developed by Stanley Keleman, more recently the trauma work of Stephen Porges, Peter Levine and Stan Tatkin's touching and practical work on how couples can stay close.
I was a tutor on a CAMS course at Southampton University.
I was the founding director of the first Natural Therapy Centre in Southampton, for 11 years, which was known for its high standards of professionalism and expertise.

I am a member of the Spectrum Associated Centres Network.

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
