About me

Changing your life may come easily, or there can be some hard work or maybe it will be somewhere in between!  My aim is to help you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

I offer short and long term counselling, depending on what you feel your needs might be.  Life and work stress; relationship difficulties; low mood; bereavement and loss; trauma; anger; anxiety; low self esteem; personal growth...  are some of the areas which you may bring to therapy, please ask if you are uncertain about whether we will be able to work together with your issue.

After leaving school I went to Sussex University to study Psychology where I obtained a BA(Hons). From there I worked and travelled for a few years, spending time in Greece, America and London. Settling in Plymouth, I worked in the Medical Industry, gaining a good understanding of the business world with it’s inevitable stresses and strains. In 1999 I embarked on an Integrated Therapeutic Counselling Course, spanning many therapeutic areas. I have worked in the voluntary sector, with a placement at the Glenborne Unit at Derriford Hospital, for the Psychotherapy department at Ridgeview and for the Firebird Charity in Plymouth.  (The Firebird Charity has now been absorbed into the NHS.)

My training is in Integrative Therapy which means that I will use a variety of therapeutic approaches depending on which a client feels will be most useful to them. These approaches are drawn from psychodynamic therapy, looking how the past may have influenced where you are today; Person Centred, which means that the therapy can be client lead and gives unconditional, genuine and non-judgemental support throughout; Cognitive Behavioural, where we might look at how our thoughts could lead to our behaviours. Other approaches may be Existential, the immediate reality between therapist and client; Gestalt, 'The whole is different from the sum of it's parts'; Transpersonal, going beyond the individual personality and embracing the mystical or spiritual.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
