Valerie Cunningham MBACP Accred,. UKCP Reg., HCPC REg., STA., EATA
Most of us reach points in our lives when we need someone outside our immediate circle to listen carefully to understand our distress and dissatisfaction. Does this touch a chord in you? If so, therapeutic counselling or psychotherapy may help.
Sessions provide an opportunity to share your concerns with a qualified and experienced professional in a confidential and comfortable setting.
During the COVID 19 outbreak I will be offering remote consultations either by phone or video.
I have worked in private practice since 1985. My considerable experience and insight enables me to work with a wide range of presenting difficulties. I provide short and longer term counselling between 6 - 30 sessions. Psychotherapy is also available for those with complex difficulties which require longer to resolve. When this is the case periodic reviews will be part of the therapy.
Overall, I offer a reliable, consistent therapeutic relationship in which clients can learn to accept themselves, live in the world realistically and enjoy their work and relationships.
I am recognised as a creative, warm, well-boundaried, trustworthy therapist who has a commitment to sound, professional practice.
Short & Longer Term Therapy
My short term work provides a focussed approach which enables you to tap into your inner resources to resolve immediate problems in order to improve communication and decision-making skills.
For longer term therapy, my approach is rooted in the psychodynamic, relational approach which focusses on the process between us in the present, which can replicate past experiences of key relationships. The combination of both the transferential and real relationships lies at the heart of our work.
When required, creative arts methods are available which can facilitate the therapeutic process.
I am recognised for referrals by Bupa, Axa PPP, Ceridian and Aviva private healthcare insurance groups.

Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Health and Care Professions Council
The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.
They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.
Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
UK Council for Psychotherapy
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
