Sally Ashworth - UKCP Registered Psychotherapist - Adult, Child and Adolescent
I set up my private practice in York 18 years ago specialising in solution focused psychotherapy and counselling, which draws on some of the more recent developments in the field, helping clients to create new choices in the way they experience their world and bringing about lasting change.
I work with adults, adolescents, older children and couples. I help people with a range of problems both short term and those requiring longer term support. One of my specialisms is Brief Psychotherapy where I help clients identify their therapeutic goals and we work in a focused, structured way to promote change and resolution over a relatively short time period. I also work with clients who require longer term support, specialising in issues that result from problems during childhood development and experience of complex trauma. Sessions are of course confidential and held in a relaxed and safe environment. I provide an opportunity for people to explore their experiences and perceptions in a way that enables self understanding.
I have completed post-qualification training as a child and adolescent psychotherapist and support children and adolescents with a wide range of problems.
The approaches I use centre around Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy (NLPt), Solution Focused therapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy and Therapeutic Modelling. These are practical and user friendly approaches which focus on what the client wants from life and how they might wish to change. Therapeutic Modelling helps clients to discover patterns of feeling, thinking and behaviour which underlie any symptoms. Once these patterns are revealed clients have the opportunity to create new choices for the future, bringing about lasting change and the capacity to face life's challenges in a more resourceful way.
There are some important aspects about the way I work which may differ from more traditional approaches. Every individual is unique and has their own map of the world and therefore I adapt my approach to suit the client. A person has all the information and resources within to be able to solve their problems and I am a facilitator in this process. Compared to traditional approaches the number of sessions required may be fewer.
I work in private practice and have worked previously with GPs providing primary care support and as an independent partner at the York Occupational Health and Well being Centre until 2011. I have been providing psychotherapy and counselling in York since 2002 and completed my supervisor training in 2009. I worked with CRUSE Bereavement Charity as a voluntary supervisor from 2008 to 2013 and worked for CYGNUS in a paid capacity as a supervisor from 2009 to 2016.
