Stress: It has its use, but stress is often a hindrance to modern enjoyable life
Stress is being studied intensively, there are currently many theories of treating it. The best method is probably not to encounter unnatural stress at all; however, for many modern people that is unrealistic. Recognising and understanding your stress is a first step of treatment. Why, when, and where does it occur? What are the symptoms? Counselling may help clarify your stress, assisting in methods for you to improve your situation.
Stress is a normal, essential, attribute of animals, including humans. In situations that required rapid reaction for enhanced survival possibilities, such as being attacked or attacking, stress 'kicks in'. The autonomic nervous system is triggered by the unconscious part of the brain. Hormones, including adrenalin and cortesol, are released into the bloodstream. Pupils dilate; hearing and eyesight becomes more acute; digestion system closes down; mouths go dry; immune system shuts down; pain nerves are desensitised; heart rate, blood pressure and breathing increase. Muscles tense, skin hair pricks up. Awareness changes to concentrate on the stressing item. Energy is 'made ready' to fight or flight. These are normal, essential reactions which help in desperate physical situations. In modern days those reactions may be useful to get out of the way of an oncoming bus. They are useless, inappropriate and harmful when they repeatedly 'kick in' during most home or workday situations.
Natural stress is for infrequent, short time periods. Modern situations often cause stress to continue for prolonged periods, sometimes over many hours of many days of most weeks. It is these unnatural stress situations which cause people to be unhealthy.
