Group counselling can be cheaper and more effective
Despite group counselling often being more effective than one to one help, and often less expensive, there is a shortage of this type of help available because many therapists are not trained to counsel in a group and I believe, as a result, that many pay more or stay in therapy far longer than needed.
Being part of a group is very often an enjoyable way for people to grow, heal and know themselves more fully through the relationships they build with others and change in ways they choose.
Group counselling is a very effective way to identify reoccurring patterns of behaviour that lead to negative reactions and outcomes in your life and other relationships, or for you to come to understand how you become stuck in difficult feelings or have negative thoughts about yourself.
Unlike one to one counselling, you can then experiment and feel confident in any changes you make because you have others to help and feedback real and not theoretical solutions.
Sometimes being in a group can play on your fears, and while this is often the case at first, most go on to enjoy the support of others who understand (because they have similar difficulties), learn and change by simply listening. Unlike one to one therapy you are not under the spotlight, and therefore it can be less intensive.
Some of the difficulties being in a group can help with:
- Social anxiety.
- Fear of not being interesting.
- Having a condition or disability which makes relating difficult.
- When you're not seen or heard in life.
- When unable to make or keep the relationships you want.
- In management and want to be able to be respected.
- Lack assertiveness.
- Feel you don’t fit in or are tolerated in groups.
- Experienced as angry.
- Lack confidence in social circles.
- Always having disagreements.
- If being anxious, scared or having low mood is a way of life.
Some people come simply to understand themselves better, or improve their inter-personal skills. You don't have to need counselling to benefit.
