Anxiety and magnesium deficiency

Anxiety, depression, irritability, fatigue, difficulty sleeping including insomnia or early waking, body pains, cramps, facial tics, nervousness, heart palpitations, migraines.

These are the symptoms often described by generalised anxiety disorder sufferers, and yet the symptoms listed above are those of magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium deficiency is a huge problem in the western world which causes real emotional and physical problems. It is largely undiagnosed by the medical profession.

If you suffer from the symptoms listed above and answer yes to some or all of the following, you are quite possibly suffering from a magnesium deficiency:

  • Do you consume caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea or cola on a regular basis?
  • Do you regularly eat refined sugars such as sweets, pastries, biscuits, ice cream, sweet drinks, puddings etc?
  • Have you had an emotionally stressful experience or a physically stressful experience such as major surgery in recent times?
  • Do you regularly drink alcohol?
  • Do you take the contraceptive pill, estrogen replacement, asthma medication, blood pressure or heart medication?

A very high quality magnesium supplement is an essential part of any wellness programme for people suffering the symptoms of magnesium deficiency, combined with a talking therapy to identify the causes of the underlying stresses.

Many magnesium supplements are of a poor quality, including the best known brands. It is important to see a therapist who is trained in convergence between nutrition, mineral deficiencies and psychotherapy, who will create a wellness programme for you to aid your recovery.
