With January coming to an end this week, now is a great time to reflect on those resolutions you made at the beginning of the month. Have you found them easy to incorporate into your daily life? Do you feel better for doing them? Or have you given up and reverted to old habits?
If you have found it difficult to make changes, consider a different approach – instead of resolving to do more, resolve to let go of the following…
1. Social media envy
Social media can be a great tool to keep in touch with friends and family, but it can also cause an unhealthy amount of envy. If you find yourself browsing online profiles thinking – ‘why doesn’t my life look like that?’ it could be time to step away. Initiate some social media free days and take in the beauty of real life instead.
2. Morning stress
If the first thing you do in the morning is roll out of bed and check your emails, now is the time to give it up. Checking your emails before you get into work will only start your mind racing, causing stress. Try to reclaim your mornings – spend time with your family, enjoy your breakfast or start a morning meditation habit. Your emails will still be there when you get to work, and this way you’ll arrive with a calmer, clearer head.
3. Negative self-talk
The way we talk to ourselves can have a huge impact on our confidence and self-esteem. Try to monitor the way you talk internally and make a conscious effort to reduce negativity and increase positivity. Make 2015 the year of “can” not “can’t”.
4. Poor self-image
Your self-image is probably so ingrained that you think you are incapable of being anything else. Try to let your self-image go this year and any limitations you have set yourself. Letting go offers a sense of lightness – take this feeling and do something positive with it.
5. Sources of happiness outside yourself
Do you think you’ll only be happy if you are thinner/richer/married etc.? If so, it’s time to let those beliefs go. True happiness comes from within and it happens when you learn to work with what you’ve got. Ironically, having this inner happiness will be the one thing that will make all other pursuits in your life far easier.
Are you still carrying around emotional baggage from last year? Release this baggage, forgive yourself for any mistakes or bad habits that dominated 2014 – that is history now. Every day is another chance to start again, so take this opportunity and make 2015 your year.
