Drinking heavily or binge drinking in the first trimester could more than double the risk of a premature birth, the research published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology revealed. However, there is no reported risk increase for those who keep their alcohol consumption levels low.
What constitutes ‘low levels’ can also cause confusion, with many people not knowing how many units are in their drink, and glass sizes can vary. As a result, many women choose to steer clear of alcohol if they are trying for a baby. It’s women who do now know they are pregnant and drink heavily who are at most risk.
