Supervision details

Supervision
As a member of the British Association for Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic Supervision, I am trained in both psychodynamic and integrative supervision.  I have substantial experience in providing supervision and reflective practice to psychotherapists and teams in the NHS, in psychotherapy organisations and colleagues working in private practice.

As a supervisor, I aim to:

  • Facilitate, encourage and inform your work with clients, supporting your professional development.
  • Explore the dynamics of the supervisory relationship and how this might inform you about your client work and any wider organisational context.
  • Enable and evaluate competent and ethical professional practice.
  • Maintain the reputation of the therapeutic profession by attending to standards, ethics and clinical governance. (Adapted from 'Supervising and Being Supervised' by Wiener, Mizen & Duckham, Palgrave, Macmillan 2003).

I provide supervision for trainee and qualified colleagues and other helping professionals seeking a psychodynamic perspective to your work whatever your training. For counsellors and psychotherapists, the supervision I offer gives continuing experiential training and development in psychodynamic / psychoanalytic / Jungian analytic theory and practice.Your needs as a practitioner will determine the type of supervision you receive. An initial consultation session will give us the opportunity to assess together what type of supervision may be most suitable. I offer both individual and group supervision for both individual and group therapy. I am a group analyst, and so I have extensive experience of working with groups of professionals seeking to learn together.

What can you expect when you enquire about supervision?

  • When you contact me, and providing we have a mutually convenient, and potential time to work together, I would usually arrange an initial business meeting within a week. There is no fee for this meeting. It may last up to 50 mins but sometimes can be briefer. This session provides an opportunity to explore whether we might work together.
  • Arrangements such as availability, regular appointment times, affordable fees, frequency of sessions, payment arrangements, and other issues can be discussed at this point and at any subsequent point in future supervision.
  • This initial session also offers an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about supervision. We would decide together whether individual or group supervision is more appropriate. Factors affecting this would include your level of training, experience and work, and also the nature and intensity of your work with clients.

Supervision Qualifications

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
