Foundation course for Emotional Therapeutic Counselling

The foundation course can be undertaken for self-development, to acquire basic counselling skills, or it can form the first stage of qualifying as an Emotional Therapeutic Counsellor.

The course is run twice a year and takes place on five weekends over five months.

Weekend one:    Saturday/Sunday 28/29 March 2015
Weekend two:    Saturday/Sunday 25/26 April 2015
Weekend three:  Saturday/Sunday 23/24 May 2015
Weekend four:   Saturday/Sunday 10/21 June 2015
Weekend five:    Saturday/Sunday 18/19 July 2015.

The cost is £700 / early-bird £630, or £250 deposit and £150 to be paid on each of the first three weekends.

The course is mainly devoted to understanding Emotional Therapeutic Counselling and exploring the techniques it uses. It includes:

  • Communication and Listening Skills.
  • Resistance and Reluctance.
  • Blocks to Self Disclosure.
  • Anger.
  • Guilt and Shame.
  • Fear.
  • Pain.
  • Addictive Behaviour.
  • The Therapeutic Relationship.
  • Confrontation.
  • Validation of Emotional Experience.
  • Healing the Inner Child.
  • Bereavement.
  • Hurt and Loss.
  • Dreams.
  • Visualisation and Imagery.

It involves lectures, workshops and discussion. Students can expect to work individually, in pairs and in groups of different sizes, and are encouraged to keep a personal journal. They are also required to keep a working record to chart their progress through the course, and in which they can incorporate notes and handouts.

After the foundation course:

Those students wishing to continue their training need to submit an assignment at the end of the course and this is used to assess the student’s understanding of emotional therapeutic counselling. It is one of the factors taken into account when assessing the student’s suitability for continuing to the diploma course, on successful completion of which they will be qualified to practise on a supervised basis, and can apply for accredited membership of The National Counselling Society and Accredited Voluntary Register (AVR) status.

Students who have completed the foundation course but do not wish to continue their training, may be invited to become friends of the foundation and as such, they will receive newsletters and can participate in foundation activities, such as workshops and conferences; which all qualify for CPD.
