9.30 am – 4.30 pm

Cost:  £88.00

Trainer:  Graeme Armstrong

This workshop is designed to deepen counsellors introduction to elements of couple counselling and participants will be encouraged to discuss their own couple case work and explore, from their own and others chosen modalities (and/or life experience) a range of hypotheses around this casework.

We will look at how we might use the work of John Gottman’s “Bids and Turns” and how we might use this exchange in communication in couple work.    We will discuss risk and referral in couple casework, in particular domestic violence and the work of Michael Johnson on intimate terrorism and situational couple violence, contraindications of couple work, when and where to refer perpetrators of domestic violence to and what to say and do next with the victim.

We will explore the relative value of discussing/not discussing the sexual relationship and how it becomes “the elephant in the room” and there will be a role play (with participant help), offering examples of interventions-good and otherwise-in couple work.

We will further explore couple counselling via sessions of a DVD of inTreatment and an imaginary couple who, session by session, disclose more about themselves and their relationships.   Participants will be provided with a range of active techniques that may help clients (and counsellor!) get unstuck in couple work.

Note: participation in this workshop does not certify that the delegate is trained in couple counselling

This is an interactive workshop building on people’s current experience and knowledge, providing 6 hours of CPD.
