A new weekly psychotherapy group
I am planning a new psychotherapy group to begin in October 2016. The group will run weekly on Thursday evenings at 7pm and each session will last 90 minutes. The group will be open to adults of any age or gender. Ideally the membership will be diverse, offering participants the opportunity to work with people who have had different experiences and come from a wide range of backgrounds.
Group psychotherapy can be a very rich experience. It is the shared exploration of relationships as they develop among the members. Group psychotherapy offers a unique opportunity to see oneself through the eyes of others and to see oneself in others. There are no preset topics and group members participate in an open conversation in which personal issues can be confidentially explored. Through the developing network of relationships the unconscious influences by which past experiences affect current emotional experience can be discovered, thought about and worked through.
Group psychotherapy can help people suffering from a wide range of emotional and relationship difficulties and can be a useful addition to other types of treatment. It requires only that group members are able and willing to reflect on the aspects of their lives they are dissatisfied with and to interact with others who are also seeking self-understanding and greater fulfilment. It requires curiosity about oneself and others and the strength to share one’s distress with others.
About the host
I am a qualified and experienced group analytic psychotherapist and I believe that groups can offer enormous benefits for many people. I appreciate that joining a group may seem like a daunting prospect but with a new group all participants will be in the same boat and, in any case, initial anxieties usually disappear very quickly.
