About me

I am an experienced counsellor working in the Newcastle and Teesside area. I have vast experience and proven track record of working with clients facing difficulties from a wide range of issues.  I am an integrative counsellor, this means I use theory and skills from many different approaches to help tailor the support for individual needs. I have experience in approaches such as person-centred counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, transaction analysis and EMDR therapy. I have experience working with people through short and long term therapy. I have many years experience working with clients in primary care IAPT service and also have experience in private practice.

Everyday life can be busy and stressful, which can result in us feeling depressed and anxious. Sometimes this can be contributed by factors we experienced or learnt in earlier life that still affect us today. I believe that by offering an individual the space to explore their difficulties we can find ways to understand the factors maintaining our problems, and by using this awareness it can help us find the strength and clarity to decide what is best for us.

I am a warm, grounded person that works in a professional and ethical manner. I offer a space to explore your difficulties in a safe, respectful way, working at the pace that is right for you. Having experienced therapy myself I can understand the difference it can make to our lives.

I work therapeutically with people that may experience depression, anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, worry, work related stress, lack of motivation, panic, social anxiety, issues with sleep, eating disorders, relationship issues, trauma, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), abuse, grief and loss, anger, low self-esteem, low confidence and many other types of difficulties we experience.

I am a member of the BACP which is the ethical body that governs the counselling sector and ensure I always work to their ethical and professional guidelines.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy that allows a person to speak about difficulties they experience in a safe, confidential space. Counselling allows you explore issues that are causing emotional pain and to look at thoughts and feelings that make you feel uncomfortable. The distress might come from life events, emotions, relationships, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour.

By having the space to explore your difficulties you can gain more awareness about how and why events affect you. This exploration can help gain a deeper understanding of yourself and encourage more self-acceptance. With further insight and understanding of yourself you can gain more clarity on what and how issues affect you. The new and deeper awareness you hold about yourself can give you more choices about how you want to think, feel and behave. This can give you more confidence to see and make the changes you want to bring into your life regardless of how tough life seems to be.

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

As well as providing counselling I also specialise my work in a separate method of therapy using EMDR, which helps to reduce the distress of past trauma. This is a proven, incredibly effective form of therapy to help process past or recent trauma. If you have had events in your life which still bring distress EMDR therapy can help to process this distress and help you to leave it behind in your past.

EMDR is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Evidence (NICE) as the treatment of choice for PTSD and related problems derived from particularly challenging life events.

If you would like to discuss your therapeutic needs and the support I offer please don’t hesitate to contact me. We can discuss the most suitable type of therapy for you to ensure your individual needs are met and you get the most appropriate support.
