About me

With twenty years of counselling, and over of 30 years of experience as a therapist working in educational, health and social care settings, I provide counselling and psychotherapy for adults and young people 11 years and over.

Why Counselling?

Many people use counselling to help them through difficult periods in their lives. It can help to gain understanding and clarity with regard to personal issues, allow careful consideration of life options, facilitate an improvement in self esteem, and provide a platform to move forward.

Counselling can be helpful if we are experiencing difficulties related to depression, stress, anxiety, bereavement, relationship problems, health issues, poor self esteem and many other challenges that life may present us with.

Even people who have supportive family or friends may find it difficult to discuss their personal issues with those close to them. Counselling provides a setting that is impartial and confidential and can provide a forum to move towards a better state of mind.
I am highly experienced and qualified counsellor, having graduated in counselling from the University of Surrey in 2001. I provide counselling to adults and young people. My approach is Humanistic, primarily Person Centred.

My background

After leaving school I trained as an Occupational Therapist and worked in health and social care for 30 years. I was always very interested in the psychological and emotional aspects of the work with my clients and so decided to develop this interest and begin training as a counsellor. I began by studying for certificates in counselling skills and theory when my children were small and continued my studies at the University of Surrey as they got older and I had more time.
Since then I have continued to study and develop my professional and clinical skills.

In addition to my private practice I have worked for 13 years as the counsellor at a large secondary school in Hampshire and spent 7 years providing counselling for a 6th form college in Surrey.
I was also a long term member of the Surrey Trauma Support Team.

My approach

My approach is Humanistic, primarily Person Centred. I have additional training in other theoretical approaches such as Attachment Theory, Transactional Analysis and Existential Therapy and these also inform my work.

Humanistic Counselling focuses on personal growth and development. As a Person Centred Counsellor I will offer you a safe, non directive, non judgemental environment in which you will be able to talk freely and explore your concerns.

This approach puts the emphasis on the positive relationship between the counsellor and client which enables an open and honest expression of feelings in order to gain insight, clarification, consider options and have greater control over the future.

I provide face to face counselling to individuals and couples in a welcoming therapy room in my home. Our work together can be short term or long term depending on your needs.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
