Vanessa Wallace MSc, MAREBT, Dip Clinical Supervision
I provide individual counselling sessions to adults using a Cognitive Behavioural (REBT) model as well as other Counselling methods and approaches I have gained in my training over many years. I will work with a wide range of emotional issues and work specifically with individuals to problem solve, identifying triggers and employing coping mechanisms for difficulties each person may be having.I believe that my life experience, my genuine interest in people as well as strong intuition has led me to this work. I have personal experiences of addictions and the devastating implications that can have on families, so have a strong empathy for individuals who are addicted or come from families of addiction problems.
I work with clients to explore and find new ways to cope with difficult emotions and the challenges that life can bring. I like to incorporate into my work life coaching if this is needed as sometimes repeated patterns in thinking and behaviour can lead to people feeling stuck or stagnating in life which in turn leads to low self esteem. This specifically led me to my passion for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and to become fascinated at how simple tools and methods of changing ways of thinking and attitudes to life can lead us to peace of mind and emotional stability.
I will also work longer term with people who feel that they need more time to address their issues, at times therapy can be about rebuilding how we are in relationships with others and my sessions can provide space to explore and make decisions in life.
All goals are set by the client with my guidance and a collaborative process will work between us to work towards more effective and contented living for every individual that I work with.
On initial contact we will decide the amount of sessions needed which can be anything from two to ten sessions with the possibility of extended care if required.
Training, qualifications & experience
I originally trained as a Person Centred Counsellor in 1998, however due to my interest in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and specifically Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) I completed a Masters Degree in REBT in 2005. I am a qualified Counselling Supervisor. I have attended courses in Family Therapy, Group Therapy, Suicide and Self Harm, and have a level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management.
I have worked in a range of settings, Women's Centres, Prisons, Charities, Individuals and with Groups. I can offer sessions via telephone or Skype if preferred. I have a wide range of experience of working with family issues, especially in respect to working with addiction in the family. I have knowledge and experience of the 12 step fellowships for recovery from addiction and have experience of other ways to recover from addiction. I have extensive experience of working with dual diagnosis (addiction and mental health).
My training and experience in Leadership and Management has given me a broad experience in the psychological needs of leaders and their teams. I have managed teams in the third sector for over four years.
I have supervised individuals working in the addictions and therapy fields since 2009 and have experience of providing group supervision.
