Vanessa Holt Registered Member MBACP
Hello and thank you for visiting my profile.
I know it takes a lot of courage to pick up the phone and ask for help, especially for the first time. I hope to make this a little easier by providing a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space to mutually explore what troubles you.
I am Vanessa, a qualified counsellor and a registered member of BACP with 17 years experience. Initially, I trained as an Occupational Therapist (rehabilitation) and worked with both adults and children with either mental health, physical, and/or learning difficulties. My work as an Occupational Therapist helped me to appreciate the importance of individuals being able to express their difficulties or feelings and to have a 'listening ear' able to empathise and offer the right kind of support. It was this that led to a desire to also train as a counsellor and to develop my skills within the talking therapies.
As a Psychodynamic Counsellor I am interested in helping individuals to understand why they over/under-react in certain circumstances, why they feel stuck, why they are anxious or depressed, why relationships keep failing, or why nothing seems to change for the better. Sometimes our actions and reactions to circumstances or people can be motivated by unconscious processes, that have become such a habit or way of being, that we are not only unaware of them, but do not have the freedom to change. It is through Psychodynamic Counselling that these unconscious processes can be brought to light, understood and challenged. We then have the freedom to choose how we wish to respond and to become the person we were truly intended to be.
I also have an interest in trauma (overwhelming experience) and have completed Level 1 in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, which looks to address these types of experiences.

I have also completed Level 1 in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Trauma (over whelming experience) which is approved by The British Psychological Society. My work with trauma is influenced by Sensorimotor of the event or events, which can be re-traumatizing. This is an unique approach to heal the wounds of trauma by, using body sensation and movement, whilst still incorporating theory and techniques from traditional talk therapy methods. Often there is little need to revisit all the details of the traumatic event/events.
Every person is unique and hence I like to work in a manner that is best suited to the individual and the issues to be addressed. I am able to offer short term and longer term work.

Treatment of Trauma
Level 1 training in Sensori motor Psychotherapy.
This is as a way of working with distress that is 'remembered' non-verbally in the body, somatic memory.
'trauma survivors have symptoms instead of memories' (Harvey 1990).
Individuals adapt or respond to trauma (overwhelming experience) in different ways. By establishing what your existing strengths are, we find ways together, for you to notice your individual body-based memory of trauma, often without the need to revisit all the details. My work with trauma is influenced by Sensorimotor of the event or events, which can be re-traumatizing. This is an unique approach to heal the wounds of trauma by, using body sensation and movement, whilst still incorporating theory and techniques from traditional talk therapy methods.
My fee for one to one counselling is £40.00 per session and is payable at each session.
I work on a short and long term basis.
I am available to offer evening aswell as day time sessions.
I would be pleased to hear from you either via telephone or email.
