About me

My name is Val Northcote and I provide individual and couple’s psychosexual and relationship counselling. I also provide sex addiction counselling. For those suffering from traumatic life events I offer EMDR Therapy to target specific traumatic memories which enables clients to be released from the grip of flashbacks, nightmares or others symptoms related to PTSD.

Counselling can provide a safe space to express, explore and resolve issues which may be causing you problems in life, both personal and or at work.  I originally trained as an integrative counsellor, focusing on Humanistic ways of working including, Person Centred, Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic and Systemic ways of working.

I have since trained in relationship therapy and psychosexual therapy (sex therapy).
Relationship Therapy (couple counselling) enables individuals or couples to work through issues which may be causing difficulties in their relationship or have caused it to end.  Issues can include difficulties in communicating, affairs, controling behaviours, jealousy, step families or work and financial matters.
Psychosexual Therapy is an approach which provides support for individuals and couples who are experiencing difficulties of a sexual nature, as well as those who would like to improve their sexual relationship. This can include premature or rapid ejaculation, erection difficulties, loss or lack of desire, painful sex or inability to have sexual intercourse.

I have a special interest in addictions or compulsive behaviours which may include the excessive use of pornography or out of control sexual behaviours. These sexual behaviours are sometimes referred to as sex addiction, although not everyone who struggles to manage their sexual behaviour will be a sex addict.

For those clients who may have experienced some kind of trauma, whether in childhood or later in life I use EMDR which is a well researched style of psychotherapy aimed at processing disturbing memories so that they can be stored more efficiently in the brain.  This frees the client from disturbing thoughts, nightmares, flashbacks or other conditions and symptoms associated with trauma.  It can also enable clients to experience improvements in their day to day life, including relationships..

I believe it is important to find a way to work with my clients that feels comfortable to them and that they can understand. Therefore I may use some or all of the above approaches with you depending on your needs. I will always be respectful and ensure the service is confidential, this will be explained at our first session, and that you remain in control of the process. My style of working will be further explained at our first meeting.

I work via Zoom, Bilateral Base, WhatsApp and telephone.

My fee is negotiable for those in financial hardship.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
