What is counselling?
People come to counselling for support when they feel distressed and when they feel stuck in some area of their lives and want to move forward. My aim is to explore together what is What counselling Involves in your life, support and facilitate any changes you might wish to make and challenge any beliefs that are keeping you stuck. Sessions are strictly confidential and non-judgemental.

What Counselling Involves

Counselling is not the same as advise. EWhen someone offers you advise they are speaking from their own perspective, telling you what they think you ought to do. They often have expectations about how you should be. Counselling is a process in which you work jointly with a counsellor in exploring what is going o in your life, see what you might come to terms with it and decide whether you want to make changes. The counsellor does not have expectations about you and how you should be, but respects your ability to make your own decisions even though this can seem very hard.

A Counsellor will -

  • Give you full attention
  • Try and see things rom your perspective
  • Give you support, tell you what they have heard and observed
  • Give you information that seems relevant and
  • Help you change beliefs that are keeping you stuck

Sometimes looking at the past can be helpful, but often the emphasis is more on looking at how your life is now and considering how you want it to be in the future. A counsellor will not normally tell you what to do or analyse you, but will offer you support and help you to consider any changes you want to make. As well as offering you support, the counsellor may challenge your current ways of thinking. Counselling sessions are very supportive and very challenging. Some people who come for counselling stay for 20 or more sessions. Others get what they want from one or two. the number of sessions is your decision.
