About me

Welcome, my name is Umaa Thampu MBACP (regd) and I am a registered Gestalt Counsellor.

I became a counsellor after being inspired by my own journey as a client and I studied at The Gestalt Centre in London. My practice offers a warm, confidential and discreet environment in South and North London.  I have over 10 years experience in a diverse mix of professional settings which include social services, youth charities and bereavement placements. I feel passionate about encouraging others to tell their stories of life, love and loss as this can empower and improve the wellbeing of individuals.

I work alongside you, at your pace and will ask you to reflect on what are your needs in this moment. I can help create meaning when life hits you with a ‘curve ball’. By recognising  unhelpful patterns of behaviour, you can reduce internal conflict and develop a greater sense of compassion towards yourself and others.

I have extensive knowledge on anxiety, trauma, identity, sexuality, relationships, work place stress/ burn out and cross-cultural issues. I thrive working with imagination and intuition, for example using drawings, noticing body sensations and I welcome any other creative possibilities. I enjoy working with groups, couples and individuals and I have had the opportunity to speak about stress management and mindfulness in occupational settings.

I practice from Kings Cross, NW1, London Bridge, SE1, Clapham Common SW4 and Balham SW12. All locations have good transport links to rail and tube. I am committed to continuing professional development and adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework.

Thank you for visiting and I welcome any questions you may have, for more information please check out my website www.hereandnowcounselling.org.uk.

What is Gestalt?
The word Gestalt is difficult to describe. If you Google the word there are many meanings, perceptions and images. The value of this approach lies in its diversity. There is no fixed method or one size fits all solution. Notice how many roles you play on a day to day to basis, e.g. Parent? Child? Friend? Partner? The list goes on and we recognise that all these different parts have different needs.

Gestalt is about working in the present but does not exclude the past. It is noticing body sensations and tensions and by raising awareness of the body we can become better equipped to self care.

I welcome any questions you may have.
