About me

Often we don't know who to talk to, or what to say when we experience stress and emotional distress, often feeling panicking, lost and vulnerable. When we are in crisis our thoughts and emotions can be overwhelming and our behaviour can becomes chaotic and rigid. We struggle with relationships and even the apparent simpler things in our lives become unbelievably complex. We are all creative, sensitive and complex beings with great compassion, and through counselling we can find a way to resolve these barriers and come to find a sense of ease, structure and understand. We learn to cope better with life and have a better view of ourselves. By reviewing personal experiences and challenging negative preconceived ideas we can develop a positive and empathic view of ourself and others.

I have worked in counselling and mental health for over 37 years.  During this time I have closely worked with clients to help them alleviate their psychological pains and fears experienced throughout their daily personal and working lives. I offer confidential, empathic and supportive therapy to help individuals to resolve their emotional, social and psychological issues and so enhance their self esteem and confidence.

I help in alleviating problems relating to:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Post trauma
  • Anger management
  • Relationship Issues
  • Work conflict
  • obsessive/complusive behaviour
  • Life coaching

Training, qualifications & experience

  • 1985 - RMN (Registered mental Health Nurse)
  • 1991 - BSc (Hons) psychology
  • 1994 - PG Dip Psychological Counselling

I started supporting and helping people through voluntary work, in 1979, and very quickly became aware that I wanted to support individuals to resolve their emotional, psychological mental health issues. I qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1985, and focused my interests on courses relating to psychodynamic, cognitive, transactional analysis and psychotherapeutic approaches and started to put these ideas into effect. This led to a natural transition to psychology and counselling and continued professional development as a nurse therapist within the community. Focusing on issues relating to Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Anger, and Loss.

After six years of short term generic counselling, I reviewed my life and decided it was time to focus back on the social and psychological roots of my earlier beliefs. I left the NHS and went to support people within the voluntary and charity sector; I joined a charity as a counsellor supporting individuals, who had been abused or experienced trauma in childhood; and I worked with Connexions supporting young people, through counselling, mentoring, and advocacy, who were on the fringes of criminal activity but who were also experiencing mental health issues.

I have also counselled individuals who were experiencing physical health related issues and offered psyychological support to people suffering menal health issues due to social deprivation and poverty.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
