About me

Hello, my name is Tom Bailey. All therapists work differently. This is the way that I work.

After you have made contact, we can arrange an introductory session. This is the chance for us to discuss your issues and background. It allows us to get to know each other a little. The session lasts for fifty minutes, takes place face-to-face, and is free of charge. At its end, we will have a good idea as to whether we might work well together. I believe that it is important to meet someone personally before deciding whether to begin therapeutic work.

Perhaps your main issue is loneliness. Perhaps anxiety, or depression. You have experienced trauma. You are finding our current societal situation ("the cost of living crisis") draining or overwhelming. Perhaps your life seems meaningless. You feel stuck. Your relationships are difficult. You are addicted to a particular substance, or activity: you have "bad" habits.  Or you may not be able to name your issue. You just know that something is wrong.

My job will be to listen carefully to what you are telling me. It will also be to hear what you are not saying. Suppressing what is most painful, shameful, or inconvenient to our self image, is a part of our development as human beings.

"Hearing", and understanding, what you are not saying will be at the heart of our work. This work is hard and it takes time. It takes time for trust to develop between two people. Typically, I work with clients for a minimum of six months; often for some years. Over the period of our work, I will get to know you better. Your self-knowledge will also increase.

(Note that sometimes an intervention of less than six months is appropriate).

When you know yourself, you see the things in your life that truly need to change. This fresh perception can be enlightening, and empowering. The changes themselves are your responsibility; I will help you to navigate them.

Specialisms: unresolved childhood issues; addictions and destructive habits; problematic relationships of all kinds; trauma; anxiety; depression; sleep problems, including chronic fatigue and insomnia; dream interpretation.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold accredited diplomas in Counselling (distinction) and Hypnotherapy (distinction). I am a member of the NCPS. I also have a BA in Philosophy from the University of Essex and MA in Creative writing from the University of Manchester.

I am committed to continuous professional development and improving my understanding of human problems. Recent training topics include: "Doubt and Suspicion in Therapy", "Existential Therapy" and Gabor Mate on addictions. Further reading is integral to my work as a therapist: Teri Quatman, Irvin Yalom and Adam Phillips (psychoanalyst) are some contemporary writers I admire.

I have run my own private practice in Chorlton, Manchester since 2012. Prior to qualifying as a therapist, I worked in mental health units, detox centres and rehabs.

I have considerable experience and knowledge in the field of addictions.

Addiction to technology (smartphones and the internet,) and the problems attending this addiction, is another specialism.

Hypnotherapy can be employed over a short period - typically between two and six sessions - for behavioral issues, such as smoking or eating unhealthily. Hypnotherapy can also be used, in conjunction with psychotherapy/counselling, over longer periods.
