About me

Counselling and therapy in my view should help us towards hurting less, making sense of ourselves and having more ability to realise our chosen potentials. As a counsellor I want to be approachable, respectful and flexible as to how counselling and therapy might work best for each person who sees me. I want the process to make sense and offer re-assurance as well as challenge. I see my work as being to offer  knowledge and expertise in therapeutic relationship whilst my clients keep essential control over whatever work we do together.

I am a BACP Registered Counsellor/Psychotherapist with Senior Accredited Practitioner status, now in private practice following long employment as a Primary Care Counsellor in NHS General Practices and as a former Associate Counsellor with Durham University Student Counselling Service.

Sessions are available weekdays and some early evenings at therapy rooms in Newcastle City Centre or at my home in the Derwent Valley.

Training, qualifications & experience

BA (1975-78)
Dip. Social Work (1985-87)
Dip. Counselling (1993-95)
Dip. Advanced Counselling and Therapy skills (1998)
Theory and Practice of Clinical Supervision (2001)
CBT Skills for Clinical Practice (2003)
EMDR parts 1-3 (2013-14)

I have completed and continue to learn from a further range of short programmes, workshops and day-trainings in many aspects of and approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. These have included creativity in therapy, spirituality, bereavement, existential work, working with difference and diversity, interpersonal psychotherapy and an introduction to psycho-drama methods.

My twenty years experience of counselling so far have been centred around continuous work (1997- 2014) for the NHS in GP practices. I worked with individual adult clients with a very wide range of backgrounds and often complex presenting difficulties within the constraints of short-term work (about 6-10 sessions). I was also, for ten of these years (2000-2010), associate counsellor in a university counselling service, seeing mainly young adults, again with a wide range of immediate problems and deeper psychological difficulties resulting from early background experiences.

To be therapeutically effective in these situations, I learned to integrate insights and practical approaches from many theoretical models into the person-centred core of my own practice and understanding. This continues to be the spirit of my counselling in private practice whether working long or short term.
