Profile

I have had many years experience working with people in settings as different as criminal justice, social services and drug and alcohol residential projects. This has given me a depth of knowledge and insight into problems that people experience when they feel under stress or feel unable to cope with day to day life events or that life is not how they want it to be. Several years ago I decided that I wanted to work with people in a very different way, to get to know them better and in a deeper, more meaningful way. I felt that counselling would offer me the opportunity to incorporate the skills I had developed in helping and encouraging people find their own inner resources to help manage their problems. I believe that as human beings, we all want to matter to someone, and for me, one of the most important ways of showing this is by actively listening and letting that person feel that they do matter and their voice is heard.
I work as a Person Centred counsellor, which means that I actively listen to understand problems which are causing emotional difficulties, and which can cause people to feel that life sometimes is very hard and difficult to understand. I believe that the most important thing in counselling is to make a relationship with the client so that together we can explore the problems that are causing difficulties for them, and try to find a new way of thinking about them and helping the client make decisions about what they would like to change and move forward with their lives.
Making a decision to see a counsellor is often very difficult for people. Some might feel that their worries are not important and will not be taken seriously, or that their problems are so big that no one would be able to help them. In my experience, being able to sit down and talk through what is bothering them is incredibly helpful and often people will immediately experience a sense of relief that someone is really listening to them.
I believe passionately that was has become known as "talking therapies" do work, and if you feel that you want to know more about how counselling can help you, then please do contact me at the above address for an initial meeting to discuss what is troubling you.
