About me

Psychotherapist with over 20 years' experience, working with individuals and couples. I can help you find new ways to manage difficult feelings, situations and relationships, as well as new sources of joy and confidence. Registered with AXA PPP,  Aviva and Vitality insurance. We can meet in person at my COVID-safe office (in Mayfair, near Bond St station),  or online.

I offer both short-term counselling for people in acute emotional crisis, and help with deeper and wider projects of personal growth, such as finding a new direction in life or healing an old trauma. Your therapy will be a joint effort - we will explore together how you became who you are today and develop ways of thinking, feeling and acting that will bring you more fulfilment.

Business and career issues are a key part of my therapy work, and I draw on my 25 years' experience as a consultant and coach. I am bilingual in English and Russian.

How I will work with you
The success of your therapy hugely depends on your trust and confidence in me as a professional, and on how we get on together as human beings. Before we meet, we can have a free preliminary telephone conversation of up to 30 minutes, which will give you a sense of what it would be like to work with me, as well as an opportunity to ask practical questions. If you prefer to meet face-to-face from the start, that is also fine and the first 30 minutes will still be free.

Our first meeting will be used to explore the issues confronting you and different ways we might tackle them, as well as to check if we feel comfortable working together. If we decide that we are the right match, then we make a proper start. We will regularly review our goals and progress, and you can end your therapy at any point with a one-week notice.

When meetings in person are not possible, I am happy to provide virtual sessions via Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, or phone. We can also create a bespoke mix of remote and in-person sessions that fits both our schedules.

How long will it take?
This depends on what we aim to achieve. People usually come to me because they are in pain or turmoil, and their first priority is to feel better and to regain their balance. This can often be achieved in half a dozen sessions or so. Sometimes, just a few conversations with a caring yet impartial listener can bring enormous relief, and then the person feels able to move ahead on their own. Or perhaps you are facing a major crisis and need some extra coping skills. If this is what you are looking for, I am happy to work in a short-term, solution-focused format.

However, if your pain is of the kind that keeps coming back or has been with you for a long time, then it may be worth your while to look deeper. Although our personalities change throughout our lifetime, early experiences shape us more profoundly than we like to admit. Retracing key events of our personal history and understanding how and why we became who we are today usually opens up new choices in life. Old habits of thinking, feeling and acting may still linger, but they will be easier to change (if this is what you decide to do), and I can offer you some tools to help with that.

Like all major change, therapy takes time, but you can speed it up by building on your insights between sessions and actively trying out new ways of being. Many of my clients leave after resolving a specific issue, and come back for another piece of work in a few months or even years - not because they are still "not sorted", but because therapy is a great way to learn and grow.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy with Distinction and am registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) since 2003. I have been working in private practice since 1999, and I have also worked in the NHS and in the voluntary sector.

Before qualifying as a psychotherapist, I worked as a journalist for the BBC World Service and spent some years in the corporate sector. I continue working with organisations as a consultant and executive coach.

UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have a lot of experience working with cross-cultural issues, e.g. in a couple from different ethnic backgrounds, or difficulties caused by relocation from another country. Living in a globalised world, we often underestimate how much stress in our lives is caused by cultural differences.

I am also interested in all aspects of behavioural change: why do we cling to habits and attitudes that we know are bad for us? how can we make a major change and still remain ourselves? I love helping clients incorporate a new behaviour into their natural way of being.
