About me

I am a fully qualified and experienced psychotherapist who has a worked with a wide range of people and issues including anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties.   I offer psychotherapy in Truro.  I am available weekdays and evenings.

My aim is to support you so that you can explore at your own pace what you are finding difficult in a warm safe non-judgmental environment.  This supported exploration helps you understand yourself, your thoughts, beliefs, feelings and relationships in a deeper way leading to more choices and a greater sense of connection with others and yourself and to well-being.

Recognising inner experiences and reactions including thoughts and feelings in the present moment helps you to identify unhelpful or automatic patterns of relating as well as cultivating and strengthening new ways of responding.  Who we are and how we are forms, develops and changes through our experiences in relationships.  Part of how we learn and develop new ways of being and heal from stuck patterns is in the context of a reflective, accepting relationship.

My approach to working relationally comes my training in Core Process Psychotherapy which integrates western psychological theory, Mindfulness and compassion practices.

Boarding School Survivors

Boarding school impacts relationships with families as children are not developmentally able to cope with disrupted relationships.  Instead children are required to take on self-sufficiency and independence before they are emotionally ready.  Children have to manage their distress alone and this can result in shutting down emotions in order to survive.

There is a cost to 'surviving' an institution and this occurs by developing a persona to hide vulnerability between you and the world.  Although this persona may work in a competitive, achievement oriented world over time when in relationship with partners difficulties can arise.

Boarding School Survivors can:

struggle to show love

struggle to communicate

withhold feelings and be unemotional

use strategy to manage intimate relationships

be secretive and suspicious about sharing thoughts and feelings

As an ex-boarder you may feel that you would like support to explore this and I am available to help you with this.

I have written a chapter in Finding Our Way Home; Women’s Accounts of Being Sent to Boarding School edited by Nikki Simpson. [Routledge 2019]
