Profile

Hello there,

As a counsellor and psychotherapist I work with couples and individuals in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. I am aware that it is not easy to take the first steps in reaching out for assistance, so I hope that what I have written below is of use to you. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Good luck with your search, wherever it takes you. I wish you well.

My work with Individuals

I offer clients a space where they can explore whatever it is that is troubling them. It may be a specific problem such as anger, redundancy or grief to name only some. Or perhaps a more general feeling of hopelessness, a sense of not being in tune with life or not feeling that you have become who it is that you want or hoped to be. Perhaps there is no space in your life where you feel safe enough to be truly open, where you won’t be judged, blamed or told what to do.

Whatever you bring, we will work together to create a fuller understanding, perhaps a fresh perspective that helps you to move forward with more confidence and certainty. We may explore what change would mean and how you might take the first steps if that is what you desire. Ultimately it is you that decides and me that follows, aiding you where I can.

My work with Couples

Relationships can come to seem stuck, stale, destructive or simply disappointing. Couples are sometimes in a painful struggle to recover from what feels like a critical blow to their relationship, perhaps a broken trust that leaves them reeling, not quite knowing where they stand in the world anymore. For others the changes and stresses that life can bring leave them feeling depleted, unloved and neglected by a seemingly uncaring partner. One partner may be searching for something that is absent in their life and have come to feel that leaving is the only way to find it. For others, the decision to separate has been reached and they are looking to reshape a relationship into one which has the best interests of their family at heart but leaves them free to continue their life in new ways.

My job is to create a space that feels safe enough for each person to speak their truth and be heard, somewhere where they a can take risks that have previously felt too threatening. Previous attempts at opening up may have resulted in hurt or blame. Couples often seek a space away from family and friends where they won’t be judged, with someone who looks to understand the situation from both perspectives. My job is to listen, support and promote the wellbeing of both partners and introduce fresh perspectives to what can feel like a hopeless situation.

Together we can explore what you brought with you to being a couple, how that influenced your being together, what fears, hopes and dreams continue to pull on you and perhaps some idea of where you want to find yourself in the time ahead. Each of you will have the chance to talk, listen, offer and question explanation in an attempt to understand for yourselves why it’s not working and how you can best move forward. Ultimately changes or no changes, it’s your decision, but through our work together you may be better informed to decide upon your future.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

MA (Distinction) in Relationship Therapy

A three year programme which integrates Systemic and Psychodynamic theories with a relationship focus studied under the Relate Institute through Hull University.

This involves a way of understanding why we are the way we are in light of our unique pasts, alongside an appreciation of how we interact and view ourselves in the present under a host of social and cultural influences. Through greater awareness we can come to feel more empowered to choose a present and future which feels more authentic and enriching.

I also integrate CBT into my work with clients.

I have worked with a diverse range of individuals and couples within a Cambridge based long standing charity, schools project and national mental health charity.

BACP registered- I work within the BACP ethical framework.

Areas of counselling I deal with

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I work with Individuals and Couples around the following:

anger - money – bereavement - effects of redundancy - low self esteem – retirement -effects of imprisonment - responses to depression - low self confidence - problematic relationship with food - emotional abuse - feelings of powerlessness - new configuration of families - difficulties with sexual relating - issues around separation - the consequences of affairs - dissatisfaction with roles - family issues - child related issues- gay issues - abortion/miscarriage - post natal depression - dissatisfactions with communication - a sense of falling out of love - family boundaries - cultural differences and how they impact on relationship issues

Of course same sex couples may bring any of the above, but I also recognise that they may have particular issues that heterosexual couples don’t experience.
