There may be self help psychological tools which you may also find beneficial to manage any symptoms you may be experiencing.
I have many years experience of working as a Counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) in various NHS settings. This includes GP practice work and 17 years in a psychological therapy department.
My professional background is in both general and mental health nursing, working with people with serious mental health problems both in hospital and community settings. I then qualified as a counsellor and CBT therapist and have worked in psychological therapies in the nhs ever since. I am also a qualified supervisor.
I use evidence-based therapies (as recommended by the NICE guidelines) to help people overcome and manage their problems. This may include depression,general anxiety disorder,social anxiety,panic disorder,ocd and low self-esteem. Sometimes it may feel like you have lost direction and struggle to get through the day, experiencing little sense of pleasure or achievement from life. It may feel that anxiety has overwhelmed you to the point where you have started to avoid situations or have become socially withdrawn, fearful of others negative judgment. You may have started to worry about your health,appearance or just cant stop worrying about everything. You may have lost confidence,become self critical, and focus on negative thoughts. It may be that you can't stop cleaning or checking and feel out of control. You may find you have become more dependant on alcohol and generally not looking after yourself, possibly feeling isolated and disassociated from what's going on around you. You may having difficulty with mood fluctuations or notice that you become more angry than usual.
As human beings we can all experience these feelings and there is often a reason for us feeling this way.Past trauma and abuse, overwhelming current stress can make us all less resilient to cope with pressure of our daily life and how we view others and ourselves. Sometimes it's about what's happened to us rather than what's "wrong" with us. We cannot help feeling this way and we are certainly not to blame. Psychological problems are extremely common and with effective therapy you can overcome your problems,learn to manage your symptoms and regain control of your life.
As a registered member of professional bodies (BACP & BABCP), I adhere to a strict code of ethics, receive regular supervision and keep up to date with training. I am also CRB checked.
What to expect
This is the first step to see if my approach may be of value and for you to see how you feel working with me.
We can either meet in private,comfortable rooms in the centre of Shrewsbury or if appropriate in your workplace. The session will last for one hour and I will explain how we will work together and answer any questions you may have. This is the first big step and understandably you may have concerns about therapy and what to expect. I hope to put your mind at ease. In this session we will focus and obtain an overview of your problems, how they affect you and plan for further therapy sessions if you wish to proceed.You may need time to decide if you want to go ahead. This is fine, there is no obligation to continue unless we both think therapy may be beneficial. If you wish to proceed we can book future appointments at the assessment appointment .No long wait.
Therapy sessions last up to one hour and will be in private counselling rooms in Shrewsbury.Initially you may benefit from weekly sessions but of course this depends on your problem and commitments.I am flexible with appointments offered to suit your preferences.My therapy approach will be discussed following a through assessment of your problems.
It’s difficult to say how many sessions you may need, as that will depend on several factors. I offer short and long term therapy depending on need. Sometimes a brief course of therapy is all that is needed, it is not uncommon for more complex problems to require more. We will review after each session to make sure the therapy is helping you and work at your pace. It’s important for you to feel comfortable and safe and will work in a collaborative manner. I hope we will gain an understanding of why you may be feeling this way, what may be maintaining these thoughts,feelings and behaviours and share tools and strategies to help manage them.

Initial home visits can be arranged if you have difficulties leaving your home,this may be because of physical issues or anxiety disorders. CBT is an evidenced based effective therapy for agoraphobia.
