Stewart Brown. CQSW BA Hons. PGDip
For 25 years I have supported people in dealing with personal crises in mental health in the voluntary and statutory sector of social care.
I am an experienced Social Worker, specialising in mental health and substance misuse.
I completed a 5 year Post graduate diploma in Psychotherapy.
As a result of my training, I offer a highly trained and empathic service.
My service offers a number of therapies, depending on your issue;
short or long term Psychodynamic counselling
The service I offer can be 1:1 and or group work.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE FIRST MEETING;
I will support you to identify your problem (if it is not already obvious to you)
We will esablish what has worked for you in the past and how any coping mechanisms have reduced or increased your un-happiness.
We will establish an agreed plan of action and work with your most immediate problems first.
I believe it is important to establish a good rapport from the outset,
I am an amiable person who will share of himself when appropriate.
I value humour, sarcasm and many human traits, for they contain elements of our true feelings; more grist for our working relationship!
Short term counseling, 3-6months;
One to one meetings of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.(see my website for explanation of this therapy)
The purpose is to Improve awareness of your strengths and identify emotional issues that affect your well-being.
We will establish what you like and don't like about your personality; the purpose is to understand that when we act out of character this is a sign something is missing from our lives.
I will ask you to share your personal history; we will together explore how this affects every decision you make as an adult.
The purpose of going over the past is simply enhanced self- awareness, the benefits reduce anger outbursts allowing anxieties to subside.
I specialise in working with recurring dreams and nightmares.
I will support you to understand the hidden messages in your subconscious; this method addresses the root causes of anxieties and depression.
Working with body illness - planning a new mental and physical approach to your condition (alongside current medical treatment)
Subject to weekly review of progress your goals for self- improvement will be clear/concise and re-defined as you become more aware of deeper needs we usually forget because we are too busy!
Long term counseling, 6 monhs +
For more ingrained problems, poor mental health (including Psychoses),
or the desire to understand yourself more deeply, perhaps spiritually or major changes in your life.
The sessions will be as above;
more time may be needed to establish improvements and concrete changes in mental health/wellbeing.
Possible therapy methods include role play, Sand tray.
Their purpose will be to allow expression of latent anger, sadness, by encouraging the body to express the anxietes of the mind.
I also offer more Structured support to isolated and/or depressed people (weekly meetings, motivational/solution focussed).
Longer term work with older people - guidance in coping with cognitive changes. Activity and mental stimulation support, to encourage remission from early onset and other Dementia’s.
I offer the following guidance in short and longer term counselling;
Eco-therapy. The action plan may include nature walks and local community network development.
Mindfulness - I will support you to establish mental & physical disciplines which will allow you to reduce negative symptoms associated with ill-health.
