About me

Over 14 years experience and over 7 years of training (3 years post graduate).

Confidential counselling and psychotherapy in a private space, for Individuals, Couples and Families.  Current relationships at home or at work, family, work-related (including burnout), life-stage, stress, persistent and continuing challenges from past relationships, conflict, anger and rage, a difficult or traumatic childhood, issues from the past or any difficulty that is important to you and your loved ones and not reaching a natural resolution on its own.

I also have extensive experience in working with psychiatric illness, personality disorders, eating disorders, suicide and suicidal ideation, trauma and post-traumatic stress and am a qualified EMDR therapist.

Some clients have given feedback on my way of working and among the things they have said they found helpful is that I am a real person, actively present on the journey of discovery and change - I tend not to sit and nod blankly or repeat what you have just said without any apparent purpose. I do join with you in searching and discovering and will say if I feel we are missing something or passing something that warrants further consideration.

I work both as a counsellor and psychotherapist. Sessions are usually in 50-minute or 90-minute appointments, most often weekly though sometimes it can be helpful and appropriate to meet more than once each week or sometimes, only once every 2 weeks.

I prefer to work toward specific (and usually properly formulated and identified), therapeutic goals over whatever time-scale it takes to achieve those goals – working in short, medium or long-term\open-ended therapy. These goals can be set entirely by you or by us working together, so it doesn't matter if you are not sure what you are trying to move toward - we can work that out together.

My main training was four years duration leading to both a BA (hons) and Dip in counselling and I have subsequently taken a further three years post graduate training in family and systemic therapy and clinical supervision.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

I have been in full-time, formally supervised professional practice since January 2004 and have worked with thousands of clients in private practice and in professional healthcare settings, including NHS-led Primary Care (IAPT) and Secondary Care (NHS Psychological Therapies Service and Community Mental Health Team (CMHT)) mental healthcare settings.   I have also worked extensively in employment and workplace counselling and in the voluntary/charitable sector and in-house as a telephone counsellor, case manager and later, senior case manager for both large and small EAP (employment assistance providers).

After completing my core training, which took a mandatory four years, I have subsequently taken 2 years post graduate training in family and systemic working and a further year post graduate clinical supervision training and more recently, EMDR training.

My private practice is in the Horsforth district of Leeds (LS18 4QD) and free parking is usually readily available either directly outside the door or within close walking distance. There are stairs to the consulting rooms.
