Your can find out more about the way I work and my special interest in the addiction field if you follow the link to my website (www.stevebarlowcounselling.co.uk) but first let me give you significant, additional facts about my experience in order that you might have some kind of information backdrop available to you.
I trained in integrative therapeutic counselling, which, in other words means that I was introduced to the most popular counselling models and synthesised those that felt most meaningful to me and, in the fullness of time, arrived at the way I practice today.
I have worked for and/or provided training to many 'addictions'-based services including KCA, Turning Point and one of the most globally established and enduring HIV/AIDS organisations, Terrence Higgins Trust, where I set up and ran the substance misuse and addictions counselling arm of their well-being department. I was also the designer of their 'flagship' sexual addictions group work programme for gay men, "Call Yourself A Sex Addict?" which I also co-facilitated on a number of occasions.
I have worked sessionally as a counselling teacher/trainer for City & Islington College, Barking College and the BACP accredited counselling training school, CPPD, based in Hornsey, London. As a freelancer I offer workshop presentations on a variety of pertinent subjects including Sexual Orientation, Sexuality Issues In The Therapy Room, Substance Misuse & The Psychology Of Addictions, Sexual Addiction and Counselling Skills for Health Professionals.
In September of 2009, I began working as a sessional therapist for SurvivorsUK, who specialise in 1-to-1 counselling and group work with male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I have since provided them with in-house training and represented the organization as a conference speaker on the subject of male rape. In 2011, I graduated in transpersonal and integrative clinical counselling supervision (PGCE @ Masters Level) at The Psychosynthesis Trust and completed a training in group work facilitation at The Gestalt Centre. At the same time, I was offered and accepted a full-time role at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge as the latest addition to their well-being service, providing 1-to-1 counselling and supervision, as well as designing and co-facilitating an extensive group work programme.
On leaving the university in 2015, I developed and implemented by own counselling, consultancy and supervision practice, which is split between Cambridge, Royston, Hertfordshire and London. I receive regular clinical supervision which ensures that I continue to work appropriately, safely and ethically in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework.
