About me

I am a qualified counsellor and coach working in private practice in Pembrokeshire. I see counselling clients with a wide range of issues, and also work as a coach with individuals and businesses - from developing advanced communication skills to facilitating personal growth, I can help you achieve your potential.

I aim to be approachable and friendly, rather than severely "professional", and I am good at building rapport and trust early on. I believe that the quality of the work I do rests far more on creating a counselling relationship in which clients can feel safe to take risks with their feelings than on theory and ideals.

As an integratively trained counsellor, I apply ideas from a range of theoretical approaches to the work I do: I frequently find that early life experiences are a big part of the challenges we encounter, and we will probably explore that aspect. However, it is also important to help people develop skills that can help them get through life today, and a large part of the work I do involves exploring, with my clients, ways in which they can operate with less stress and emotional discomfort, while they start to make sense of their reactions, and - hopefully - start to change them.

A huge part of how I work is about encouragement and helping my clients find their own particular strengths and qualities, and enabling them to recognise the tools they already have to deal with life's challenges - it is easy for all of us to take for granted the abilities and attitudes that have enabled us to get this far, rather than celebrate them...even if at the same time we recognise the need to update them.

With a long and established background working in business, I also have a good awareness of the issues that arise within organisations, both at a personal and an organisational level. As such, I am well placed to offer support and guidance to people experiencing challenges in these settings, including workplace bullying, goal setting, personal and professional development, and communications skills.

In common with my fellow professionals, I take my ethical responsibilities extremely seriously: confidentiality is a high priority, and the interests of my clients are paramount. I wholeheartedly subscribe to the values within BACP's ethical framework, and aim at all times to provide a caring, supportive and valuing service to all of my clients.

Training, qualifications & experience

I came to counselling after a long career in IT, during which time I worked in a range of businesses, from small operations to very large corporates. I always had an interest in thinking and psychology, which I put to use as a trainer and first line of contact for customers and end users, before deciding to make a career change to therapy.

I completed my bachelor's degree in Integrative Counselling at Roehampton University, London, in 2007. Since then, I have worked in a number of fields, including 7 years' work as a schools and college counsellor, alongside working in a GP surgery, and extensively in private practice.

I hold a Post-Qualification Certificate in Counselling Children and Young People in addition to my primary counselling qualification, and a Diploma in Adlerian Counselling (Dip. ASIIP)

For the last six years, I have been a tutor on a counselling Certificate and Diploma course, which is a valuable source of insight and professional development opportunities for me as well as (hopefully!) for my students.

In 2021, I was awarded the Adlerian Society UK Institute for Individual Psychology Diploma in Adlerian Counselling.

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Some of the premises I operate from are accessible.
