Stephanie Walker.Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling.Reg.MBACP
Hello my name is Stephanie. You might like to know why I chose this profession? Well there are quite a few reasons really. From as early as 12 years old I found myself being interested and drawn to how people behaved and what made them tick? I always felt a natural inclination to building relationships and working with clients on an in depth level. In 1996 I worked as a listening volunteer for the Samaritans and this started my journey of personal development and going to University to complete my Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling. Along the journey I personally experienced the loss of both my parents and other losses also which have really helped me to grow both professionally and personally. I feel I have natural ability a gift if you like which I would like to use to give something back to society.I have grown through my own adversity and perhaps counselling can help you to grow and learn through your adversity too? My practice takes place in Huddersfield West Yorkshire. Fundamentally my approach is Person Centred. My aim is to build a trusting relationship and safe environment where my clients can explore their issues and begin the process of change by experimenting with new behaviours which work for them at this stage of their life. As counselling progresses I then use the Relational approach because often the therapeutic relationship can be used as a model in which to try new behaviours in a safe place and this new behaviour and new ways of coping can be used for healing in other important relationships in the clients' life. I am bound by working to the BACP's Ethical Framework and my professionalism is of the utmost importance to me as is building a trusting working alliance with you.
Once the working alliance, which is what it is called, has been established and I am now learning more about my client by my active listening and showing empathy for your experience of your life experiences, then I will start to use other techniques/approaches which I feel will suit each individual client. Counselling shines a light on the more difficult areas of life which perhaps need to be looked at and explored in more fullness and detail. For clients who find it difficult or awkward to verbalize what is going on for them emotionally, I will then introduce a more creative way of working. For example, drawing or writing can turn a key and help clients to express themselves more freely. Use of shells, pebbles and soft toys can all have their place in the right session at the right time.
I use my skills, knowledge and experience as a counsellor but also my intuition plays a part in the sessions. I pick up on clients' unhelpful behavioural patterns and feed this back to the client bringing this into the client's awareness.
I work well with difficulties from childhood which have not been understood or resolved, in some cases not even talked about. I have worked with sexual abuse and trauma, bereavement counselling, anxiety, stress and depression, addictions and relationship problems. Helping to build confidence and self-esteem.
I trust all my clients have their answers within. A successful working alliance and safe environment would be of benefit to anyone struggling with any of the issues that I have mentioned.
Please do not be afraid to contact me if you need to ask any questions.
Contrary to societies view on a person seeking counselling being weak, it is quite the opposite and shows immense strength and courage. It shows that that person wants to live a better life.
