M Y E X P E R I E N C E:
I am a senior BACP accredited psychotherapist and supervisor, trained in individual Gestalt psychotherapy, trauma therapy, bereavement counselling and CBT. Get a small sense of me by watching a short video on my website www.psychotherapyinbrighton.com
I have worked with clients for over 19 years: in the NHS, in Higher Education and in private practice. I was Head of Counselling and Mental Health for a large University, managed psychotherapeutic services for adults, children and young people in Brighton, and managed a national Mediation project for the Ministry of Education in Luxembourg. I also work as a consultant and trainer, nationally and internationally. I have been awarded senior accredited status by the BACP and have published for the BACP and others. I am registered with Bupa, Aviva and other insurance companies.
This is what one of my clients said:
“I can’t believe how long I have waited to start Counselling. Now that I come to the end of it, I can say that it was one of the most important things I have done in my life, apart from getting married and having children of course!”
W H A T I O F F E R:
I work in private practice in Brighton and Lewes and see clients on a short- and long-term basis, depending on their need. I work with complex long standing issues as well as situations that have just arisen.
In addition to the general 4 year psychotherapy training, I also did substantial training in trauma therapy with Babette Rothchild, one of the leading trainers in the field, bereavement counselling, CBT and somatic interventions. I therefore have specialist knowledge and training in several different approaches, which enables me to use the approach that best suits the issues you bring, rather than asking you to fit the approach.

I support clients to contain the troubling situation they are in so that the impact it may have on their life and their relationships is not spiralling out of control. We work together to identify what is needed to bring movement into a seemingly stuck situation and to find a way of integrating new behaviours into a more conscious and choiceful way of being. I believe that it is by connecting with our own potential and our inner resources that we heal, grow and expand.
Together, we explore current patterns and how they impact on your life and your relationships. Once you have become more fully aware of them and understand how you may actively maintain them, you can start experimenting with change. In the safety of the therapeutic relationship you may be willing to take the risk to express yourself more fully and feel yourself expand. From that place of awareness you can experiment with different behaviour. At that point you may see real change in your relationships and your environment and I will support you in finding a way to integrate this new way of being into your life.
I have witnessed many times what a profound difference this way of working can make to peoples' lives. That is why I am deeply passionate about my work.

CBT (Cognitive Behavious Therapy) is widely used in the NHS as it is a quick and cost effective intervention that gets people going again. I have been trained in CBT and have worked in the NHS for years. CBT can be very helpful with effective coping strategies and in changing dysfunctional thinking patterns.
Where appropriate and helpful, I may use CBT in my work. I will always do this from a relational background. My experience has shown that some clients don’t take to the very structured CBT approach and prefer a more relationally orientated way of working. CBT focusses mainly on client's thinking and behaviour.
Different people need different approaches. In the first assessment meeting you will get a sense of my way of working.
