About me

Hi I'm Sophia. I am a qualified and BACP registered Psychodynamic Counsellor and Psychotherapist. My background is from a health and social care setting and that alongside my therapeutic qualifications allows me to provide a holistic and compassionate service to my clients, which takes into consideration the social, emotional, cultural and environmental aspects of their lives. With regards to my therapeutic practice I have experience of working with adults in the voluntary, public and private sectors. I also work with children and young people and have an additional qualification in child and adolescent mental health gained through extensive training with CAMHS.

What to expect from counselling

Counselling is often likened to a journey and one of my roles is to take that journey with you and help you to try and achieve the outcomes you desire by providing a safe, containing and non-judgemental space to explore the aspects of your life that you are struggling with.

The psychodynamic aspect of my work means that part of this journey will involve exploring your childhood and early experiences with the hope of discovering and working through any unresolved issues or traumas. One of the most effective ways of doing this is by establishing something known as the therapeutic alliance, which essentially involves developing a therapeutic relationship together, from which we can explore your relational interactions, ability to trust, empathise and reflect. The hope is that this will enable us to gain some insight and clarity into the ways in which you relate to yourself and others, as this should be expressed within the dynamics of the relationship we form. We will then explore and reflect upon this together with the aim of allowing you to recognise the role you play in the relationships you have and empower you to make any changes that you feel would better your life and emotional well-being.

As this is your journey you will have the freedom to lead the sessions and discuss whatever you want to, without fear of being told what to do, say or think and without fear of judgement.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
