About me

Face to Face and Online Counselling Now Available

Hello, my name is Sinead and welcome to my profile. I offer a free initial telephone consultation to talk through the issue you are experiencing. I can help if you are feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of life and want someone to talk to. You might be feeling 'stuck', or trying to find a way out of anxiety or depression? I can help you.

Perhaps you are having relationship issues.  We can often struggle with those closest to us. I can help you navigate the issues that are affecting you. We can work towards a more harmonious relationship balance with understanding and empathy. Professional relationships can be difficult to navigate too sometimes, we can also help in thi sarea.

Suffering a loss or trauma can leave you feeling isolated and lonely. You may simply want to take charge of your life and make some changes to the way you think and relate to others. Talking to someone away from family and friends can help.

When you experience issues that unsettle you. Issues that may be challenging to think about on your own, I can help. By meeting together on a regular basis in the safety of my comfortable consulting room, we can attempt to confront your fears and find ways to approach life's obstacles in a manageable way, generating the potential for positive change. Why not call me and we can talk about how I might help you.

My approach

I am a qualified and experienced counsellor with an integrative approach. I will listen in a non-judgemental way, offer caring confidential support and help to guide you to discover where your difficulties may stem from.

We often ignore or bury painful experiences from the past even though they can continue to affect the way we behave and think in the present. Exploring these experiences results in a deeper understanding of yourself and others.

It can be beneficial to talk to an experienced therapist with an unbiased perspective, who can offer a safe space to talk and is not connected to family or friends.

Areas of counselling that I work with

  • Relationship issues
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low self esteem/self confidence
  • Social anxiety
  • Shame
  • Anger management

Young Peoples Counselling

Young people are under an enormous amount of pressure at school, home and with friends. This is all usually well managed but if we add parental separation, illness, abuse, bereavement, sexual identity or gender issues, bullying, relationship issues and anxiety, to name but a few, this becomes overwhelming. Young people often retreat to their room, put their head phones on and stop talking. Without the right sort of help they may turn to harmful ways of coping, making the situation even more complicated.

Statistics taken from the Mental Health Foundation indicate that 70% of young people who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.

It is often very difficult for a child to talk about their difficulties; this can result from not understanding what exactly is happening to them, and therefore not being able to articulate it. I work towards helping your child become more self-aware, leading to better self-care and in the process, learning the language needed in order to talk to those who can help them outside of the counselling room.

Training, qualifications & experience

I graduated from York St John Universty and hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling (PGDip). I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).

I enjoy working with both individuals and couples and have had training in couples therapy on approved College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) programmes. I am also a registered counsellor with Pink Therapy.

I have experience of working as a member of the Family Therapy team at the Child and Adolesence Mental Health Service at Limtetrees, York (CAMHS). I have worked with young people and families to overcome relationship issues and effect positive change through intensive therapeutic family interventions. I also have over 15 years experience of working directly on a 1:1 basis with children and young people.

I specialise in Anger Management and have co-facilitated a research project at York St John University, developing tools and practical strategies for client use.

I work closely with the LGBT community, providing a safe, non judgemental space for clients to explore both their sexuality and gender and place in the world. I am GSRD aware and kink friendly.

Currently I am working in collaboration with specialist men's groups (Menfulness) to support the mental health of men and reduce the stigma around accessing support through counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
