About me

How can counselling help you?

Sometimes in life we can find our self experiencing relationship issues, challenging life events and emotional difficulties that are difficult cope with alone. I am a registered and Accredited  counsellor with the BACP with 19 yrs experience of counselling adults and children experiencing such times in their lives.
I appreciate that taking the step to seek out a counsellor can be a daunting thing for most people, whether it is for themselves or their child. I value the uniqueness and worth of every individual and provide professional and confidential counselling that will put you or your child at the centre of the process. My counselling approach is called Integrative, which is where different counselling approaches such as Creative, CBT and others are blended throughout the process. A way of working together that is tailored to your individual needs.
Counselling offers a therapeutic relationship where difficulties can be explored and processed enabling you to feel strengthened and better able to cope with life's challenges. Because I understand that coming to counselling and opening up to another person can be a difficult and even, at times, an emotionally painful process I always seek to provide warmth, acceptance and a non-judgemental counselling relationship in line with the BACP ethical framework.
My counselling experience with individual adults and with children in a school's counselling service has been in addition to many years experience as a qualified Nurse and also years as a Teaching Assistant working with children with special needs in mainstream schools. I also have counselling experience in a special school and am able to adapt how I work if a client finds verbal communication challenging. I work using creative and play-based approaches especially when working with children.

what to expect in the first session?

Once you have emailed through counselling directory or contacted me by phone I will arrange an appointment for the first session and send you an assessment form to complete. This initial assessment session is where you can find out more about how counselling works and give some background about what has led you to seek counselling. It is also a chance for you to find out whether you will feel comfortable talking to me. If you are seeking help for your child then this initial session can be a joint parent/child one to enable you both to meet with me and explore the counselling process.

I offer face to face/online/telephone counselling within a private, discrete  setting in my own dedicated counselling room in Ballynahinch, Co Down. If you are interested do get in touch by phone or email and ask for an initial assessment session to find out if this is the right way forward for you (or your child).

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
