Sharon Convisser, MBACP; Dip Couns
I am a qualified counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist with many years experience of working with adults of all ages, helping them improve relationships, manage emotional difficulties, and work towards positive change in their lives. For 28 years, I worked within major organisations in the area of counselling and behavioural change, problem solving and crisis management before establishing a private practice. My training and experience enables me to offer a range of interventions within therapy to help with a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, panic disorder, phobias, anger or relationship and family difficulties. Please see the list below for a full summary of the issues that I can assist with.
Most of us experience emotional challenges in our lives that can impact on our work, relationships and our well-being and it is not unusual to seek counselling as a method of working through our problems. You may be going through a difficult period in your life or have an issue that you have been struggling with for a while. You may be in the middle of a current crisis which is causing you a lot of stress, or struggling to manage distressing thoughts and feelings. Whatever the issue, I provide a safe, confidential and comfortable environment so that you can work through any difficulties and achieve a greater peace of mind.
I have the fundamental belief that people are experts in their own lives, but that sometimes when we are in crisis or when problems are overwhelming, it can be difficult to see a way forward. I see the aim of counselling as a means whereby people can be helped to reconnect with their inner resources and achieve the changes they wish. We can work together so that you can have a clearer view of your choices and make sense of what is worrying you.
How my sessions work and what to expect:
It is often difficult to take the first step to seek counselling and it is important that once you do, you feel at ease with the counsellor. The first appointment is therefore a helpful opportunity for us to meet and for you to decide whether you will feel comfortable with the counselling process. I offer this appointment at a reduced cost and there is no obligation to you continuing sessions afterwards. The first appointment allows us, most importantly, to have time to talk about the issues you would like help with. We can discuss any queries you may have about counselling and whether the approach I offer may be helpful for you.
If you decide to continue counselling with me, each session lasts 50 minutes and the number of sessions can be open ended or short term. We can discuss what may be most helpful for you when we meet. I will listen carefully to what has brought you to counselling and what you want to gain from the experience. I will not judge you nor direct you towards anything, as the space is for you to explore your thoughts and experiences.
My counselling work is underpinned by the psychodynamic approach, which is based on the view that our feelings, thoughts and behaviour are influenced by past experiences and relationships. Through working with you in counselling, our aim together would be to help understand how these experiences may be affecting your present day life and relationships. During this process, you will be able to see your options more clearly and have the opportunity and confidence to make changes if you want to. My skills enable me to utilise different techniques and tailor them to your individual need depending on what may be most helpful to you.
