About me

My name is Dr Selina Warlow and I am a Clinical Psychologist. I specialise in working with children, teenagers and their families and support them with a wide range of difficulties and concerns. I am a friendly and experienced child psychologist and offer an accessible service either within your own home or another venue to suit your needs.

If your child or family are facing challenges then talking therapies can be really helpful. It is not always easy as a parent or carer to know how best to support your child. I aim to work in a non-blaming and collaborative way to help children, adolescents and families to help make sense of their experiences and work through solutions and strategies to manage these.

I hope to be able to provide support for you or your family. I offer a free telephone consultation if you would like to discuss whether I am the right service for you.

DClinPsych, PGDip Mental Health Studies, BSc(hons)

Clinical Psychologist (HCPC)

I am a  Clinical Psychologist specialising in children and families with a range of psychological difficulties.

I have spent 8 years working in the NHS and currently working within a busy specialist child and family mental health service (CAMHS) focusing on clinical approaches for families and children across the whole age range, including work with many cultural and ethnic groups.

After completing my Psychology undergraduate degree at Royal Holloway University of London I completed further post graduate training in Mental Health Studies. I then worked as an Assistant Psychologist in an Anxiety Disorder Residential Unit and at the North London Priory. As part of my doctoral training I have worked in a number of different settings and with a range of client groups including: learning disabilities, older adults, working aged adults, looked after children and in a family service at the Royal Marsden working with children who have a parent affected by cancer.

With a family myself I have a good understanding of the demands of parenting and some of the challenges families face. I have experience of working with children of all ages and adapt to the needs of the child to maximise their engagement in treatment.

Further information

Treatment Offered

Treatment is tailored to the needs of the individual. I will often base treatment upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Attachment Therapy, Systemic Therapy or draw upon other well recognised and evidenced theories.

What to expect

Telephone Consultation

If you think your child could benefit from support for their difficulties then please get in touch with me. After you make contact I will arrange a time to speak with you on the phone to get some brief details about the type of difficulties you would like help with so I can ensure I am the right person to support your child.

Assessment

If appropriate we will arrange an assessment appointment. Depending on the nature of the difficulties and individual circumstances (e.g. age of child) this first appointment may be with parent(s) alone or with parent(s) and their child/adolescent. At the assessment I will try to gain an understanding of everyone’s perspective of what the difficulties are. I will take a detailed history to help me understand how the difficulties might have arisen and what might be maintaining them. I will also gather any further relevant information. This appointment will be around 90 minutes. Based on this we will discuss the type of therapy or counselling which is most suitable.

Treatment

If you decide to proceed with a recommended treatment we will decide on an initial amount of sessions, their frequency and when we will review progress. What we talk about in sessions will be confidential unless I feel you, or other people, are in danger in which case I will discuss with you informing the appropriate external agencies. I may also discuss aspects of our work with a colleague in professional supervision but will keep identifying details of you anonymous.

I will write a letter or report at the end of our sessions, summarising the work we have done and how progress can be maintained in the future.
