Have you ever felt a racing heart, sweaty palms and that really unpleasant panicky feeling? Do you wake in the night with your mind racing or can't switch off before bed? Do you ever feel so overwhelmed that you can hardly breathe sometimes?
Most of us experience nerves or anxiety at one point in our lives, but it becomes a problem when it prevents us from doing what we want. We might avoid using the phone, meeting up with friends, going to the shops or attending meetings at work. Anxiety is a very normal reaction to some of these occasions but it can start to get in the way of our happiness.
My name is Sarah Butler, I am an experienced CBT therapist and specialise in depression and anxiety. I work full time with people with anxiety in the NHS and have a small private practice.
The way I work
I provide a confidential, safe and welcoming environment, based in Devizes. I work collaboratively with you, sharing an understanding of what might be maintaining the problem, and providing guidance and education around how to manage these difficulties. Everything I do is informed by the CBT framework and is evidenced based (see NICE guidelines). The aim is that by the end of our sessions, you will have the knowledge and understanding to be your own therapist. The following link can tell you more about CBT.
I have recently completed part I and II EMDR training. EMDR is a fairly new technique that can offer relief for emotional trauma, this can include childhood and/or adult trauma, as well as many other applications. Like CBT it is recommended by NICE and used in the NHS. Feel free to call me to find out weather you are suitable for EMDR. The following link will tell you a little more about EMDR.
Our first session
Our first session will be an opportunity for you to describe how your difficulties are effecting your day to day life, the impact it is having on you as a person and a bit about your background and current circumstances. We will also discuss your goals and what you would like to get out of the sessions. I will be able to tell you more about the way I work and what you might expect from working together. I will also explain a little bit about CBT. There will be plenty of opportunity for you to ask any questions you like about the therapy.
Training and experience
In 2016 I began Accredited EMDR training with trainer Sandi Richman, who was trained by the originator or EMDR, Francine Shapiro. Comprising of an intensive 3 days training including theoretical background, research base, application and clinical skills, followed by a supervision workshop.
In 2014 I was selected for the High Intensity CBT training at Exeter University and funded by the NHS. This training is post graduate level and required one year of intensive study. I continue to work and train within the NHS. I maintain my professional accreditations and see this as a way of adhering to professional standards.
I became a therapist from a psychology degree, I was passionate about working with people in order to understand more about their experience. I have an ability to empathise and am a kind and considerate listener. I am passionate about people and helping others achieve their full potential, I believe that with support, understanding and evidenced based guidance people can move forward in their lives achieving their goals.

Other areas of counselling I deal with
My main focus is difficulties related to low mood and anxiety. I have an interest in short and long term depression and the impact it can have on our day to day functioning, relationships and motivation. I also enjoy working with anxiety issues particularly social anxiety and trauma related symptoms. People tend to think of trauma as big traumatic events like a car accident or witnessing a murder. Actually we have multiple 'mini' traumas throughout our lives; our parents separating when we are young, our own relationship breakdown, redundancy, these are all 'mini' traumas that can leave us with a reduced resilience, and a lost sense of confidence. I use evidence based therapies to help people process such traumas. Using non intrusive techniques and a facilitative approach which allows people to move on as quickly as possible.
