About me

Currently open for assessment and waitlist. (I Invite you to scroll down and review my training, qualifications and fees before making an enquiry).

Hello there, I'm Sandra.  I'm known by colleagues to be an open-minded, down-to-earth person who aims to build compassionate, supportive relationships with my clients. My approach is collaborative, working alongside each individual.

I’m a trauma-informed practitioner trained in a range of different but complementary theories including Object Relations, Attachment, Client-Centred approaches, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, memory reconsolidation techniques, Internal Family Systems, Music & Imagery and Arts Psychotherapy. I have been integrating Eye Movement, Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) into my practice since 2017 and am an EMDR Consultant in Training. My offering can include the use of active imagination and creative exploration using expressive arts and music, where this is appropriate to the therapeutic task.

Most of my 1:1 work is remote, and I am trained and certified to deliver therapy online with the Association for Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO). My professional registrations are with the U.K. Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) for adults, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for adults and adolescents, and I am accredited to work with adults with EMDR Europe.

In order to keep abreast of the latest industry innovations and offer good value, I regularly participate in professional development (please scroll down to see a complete list of my core trainings and professinal development). I am currently completing my Certificate in Traumatic Stress with the Trauma Research Foundation (Bessel van der Kolk et al.), and am engaged in Augmented Psychothreapy Training with the MIND Foundation in Berlin.

EMDR

I offer short-term EMDR for single incident trauma, mid-term EMDR for multiple trauma, and long-term Integrative EMDR Psychotherapy for chronic traumatic stress and cPTSD. In the case of a single, discrete traumatic event (e.g. car accident, house fire, a traumatic birthing experience), EMDR can be delivered in as little as 6-8 sessions from assessment. In terms of chronic (early) traumatic stress and cPTSD, Integrative EMDR Psychotherapy is a longer course of therapy which can be transformative.

I also offer Integrative Arts Psychotherapy and Supportive Music and Imagery - a short-term resourcing psychotherapy which is part of the Guided Imagery and Music Continuum (Helen Bonny/Lisa Summer).

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

UK Council for Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Creative Process in Therapy

Using the arts as part of therapy isn't to do with being an artist; much of my work is with people who have little or no experience of using the arts in their adult life.

The arts work with a part of us which can be under-used or forgotten as we grow into adulthood, but can be of great value when words don't seem enough to convey the depth of our experiences. They can be used to express and contain emotions safely, create distance and objectivity, and provide a bridge between feeling and thought. In this way, the use of the arts can help us to move beyond our difficulties.

The arts can be used at any time of life and in my practice I have used the arts with young people and adults of all ages. In session the integration of arts with talking therapy is very important; the ratio will be something like 60/70% talking to 30/40% arts (this varies according to each individual and from session to session).

I use a wide range of materials in my practice, including postcards, paper, pencils, clay, charcoals, pastels, paint, natural and man made objects and sand tray.
