Hi, my name is Sandra and I am a qualified counsellor living and working in Hertfordshire, based in Watford and St Albans. Through counselling, I am able to offer you a regular time and space to think through any worries that are interrupting your sense of wellbeing and capacity to cope with life.
Experience has taught me that people often seek help when problems have resulted in them feeling isolated, misunderstood, overwhelmed or frustrated. I understand how effective it is to talk about problems in a confidential setting; giving yourself the chance to look into what is happening, how you are dealing with it and what your options are.
Should we work together, you can expect our discussions to focus on your thoughts, feelings and how this affects your behaviour. I will listen to what you have to say and observe how you are in the room with me; verbal communication is only one part of how we express ourselves and identifying our non-verbal signals (such as expression, posture, movement) can bring about a greater awareness and deeper understanding of past and present experience. Together we can explore your perspective on life, what feeds it and how you might want to change.
I know that for some people a few sessions are all that is needed, whereas for others longer term, open ended work is wanted. I will be guided by you on this.

I began working in the field of counselling ten years ago and qualified in 2011 as an Integrative Counsellor (using psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive therapies). I continued my professional development with a second diploma in Gestalt theory in 2015.
Fundamental to these theoretical approaches is the belief that, through greater self-awareness, we can understand and meet our needs which in turn generates our personal growth. As we grow, we begin to develop our potential and so feel greater satisfaction. Relationships with family, friends and in work can improve as we express ourselves with increased consistency and confidence. We can accept and heal past hurts and, if we choose to, we can bring about change in our life.
Our therapeutic relationship is an important aspect of our work together. Being able to examine what goes on in the ‘here and now’ offers so much information about recurring patterns of behaviour and the effect they have on us and our relationships. It is my aim to establish trust and a sense of safety between us so that you feel able to reflect on sensitive issues and challenge attitudes that might once have been useful but may now be keeping you stuck and holding you back.
My counselling experience has been both in private practice and voluntary agencies. I have worked for Michael Sobell House (Mt Vernon Hospital), The Peace Hospice (Watford), HAGAM Substance Misuse Agency (Uxbridge) and Mosaic Counselling (St. Albans).

I work within the Ethical Framework of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This means that at all times I aim to be trustworthy, honour the autonomy of my clients, promote clients’ well-being and safety, and work in a way that is fair, impartial and respectful to others and myself.
