Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

You may also be drawn to counselling simply because you want to gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

Counselling provides the opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways of living more resourcefully and confidently, giving you a greater sense of well-being. It will give you space to work through difficult issues you may be experiencing. Sharing difficulties with someone in a non-judgmental, confidential environment will enable you to make sense of things, often resulting in positive changes, new perspectives and positive growth.

As your counsellor my role is one of honest companionship, to stick with you through thick and thin without judgement in complete trust and confidence. It is not a role which involves giving advice like perhaps family and friends. I believe in and respect a person’s individuality and that you have all the skills already in you to achieve your goals: I am alongside you to draw out, and work with your potential.

Counselling can equip you with better life skills and you will have the opportunity to gain a better/deeper understanding of how some of your thinking and/or behaviours may have developed.

Sessions are usually for one hour per week. During the first meeting we will discuss your expectations, what you hope to achieve and what I can offer you. It is also important to get to know each other so that you can decide if you are comfortable working with me.

The number of sessions needed varies from person to person and this would be discussed during the initial meeting. Reviews are built in to look at any progress made.

A Code of Ethics is important to safeguard professional standards, to ensure accountability and to provide an honest and ethical service.  It also safeguards the client, the counsellor or coach as well as the counselling and coaching professions.  I work under the BACP's published Code.

The first step is to get in touch in order to establish whether counselling is the right route for you and will suit your needs. It is of utmost importance that you feel comfortable and able to trust our collaborative relationship. I offer a free initial 20 minute telephone consultation so that you can ask any questions

I respect every individual's right to autonomy and confidentiality. I offer an initial free 20 minute telephone consultation; no written notes are taken without your consent and all callers can remain anonymous.
