70-72 The Havens
It's hard to pick the right counsellor - there are so many of us! Whoever you choose it is important that you feel safe and comfortable, respected and listened to without judgement. The relationship between you and your counsellor is critical especially if you are feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, loss and/or depression about where you find yourself right now in your life, your relationship or just feeling unable to cope.
I have been a counsellor for around 25 years. I have worked with individuals and couples on all sorts of problems and issues. I started my counselling career with Relate and working with all kinds of relationship issues (heterosexual, homosexual, lesbian and lately transgender issues), as well as bereavement and loss and all the difficulties involved in separation and divorce. I then moved on to working with clients suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the impact that PTSD has on trying to live a normal life and learning to cope with traumatic flashbacks. Along the way I worked, and still work, with victims and perpetrators of Domestic Violence and adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and neglect.
There are many 'tools' and theoretical approaches to help someone come to terms with what is happening, or has happened, in their life and how best to work through those dark periods of anxiety, depression, deep sadness and loss. Throughout my 25 years I have qualified in a lot of them - Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Solution Focussed Brief Therapy, Life Coaching, Hypnotherapy and now see myself as more of an Integrative Counsellor using all of these skills to help my clients overcome, or come to terms with, whatever is troubling them.
In my private practice I work with clients to recognise and be able to talk freely about whatever issues they want to bring into counselling: dysfunctional, abusive childhoods, anxiety and depression, relationship difficulties bereavement and loss, problems with anger, addiction and low self esteem and general lack of confidence. I also work part time with Ipswich Women's Aid Lighthouse as a counsellor and facilitator in their Freedom Programme.
I see my role as your counsellor as offering you a safe place so that you can explore and understand the motives and reasons for feeling the way you do and to work with you in finding the best way for you to move forward appropriately. At all times we will work at your pace and with your own agenda.
I would be happy to meet with you for an initial 30 minute assessment free of charge. If you feel comfortable and willing to work with me we will go on for further sessions. My charge is £30 per hour. I use a private counselling room at Basepoint Ipswich where there is free parking and the address is given above. Call me on my mobile or email me direct. I look forward to hearing from you and we can go from there.
