About me

  • Do you find that your mind keeps returning to a problem which you cannot put down?
  • Have you been ignoring issues in the hope that they will go away?
  • Is your emotional reaction out of proportion when something happens to upset you?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions then counselling may be able to help you.

I am a BACP registered counsellor based in Burnt Ash Lane BR1, and my passion is helping clients move out of their comfort zones and into all of the possibilities that life offers.  Whether you have low self-esteem, are struggling with your relationships (or lack of them!), considering a new direction in your career, or are simply overwhelmed with depression, anxiety or anger issues, give me a call and let’s talk. There is no need for you to face your problems alone.

My counselling approach will include looking at any physical symptoms of stress you may have, retelling your story in order to get it into order in your own mind, identifying unhelpful thought patterns and looking at where these may have originated.  We know what to do to stay physically healthy but may give little thought to how to maintain our mental health, this is where counselling can help. I feel that it is important to look at you holistically in order to help you to lower your stress levels and regain balance in your life.

I work with clients both in short term and longer term counselling. As part of my training I have had to have extensive personal therapy of my own, so I know what it feels like to make that call then attend a first session. Hopefully I can help to put you at ease.

The types of problem I work with include:

  • Family, friendships, and parenting
  • Ageing and health issues/scares
  • Stillbirth, miscarriage or loss of a child, abortion
  • Living with anxiety, phobias or depression
  • Finding meaning in your life, loss of direction
  • Loneliness, shyness, loss of identity and low self-worth
  • Relationships and mixed race partnerships
  • Bereavements, both persons and pets, loss of friendships and isolation
  • Becoming a carer, coping with disability
  • Infertility
  • Work difficulties, bullying, redundancy, changing career, becoming self-employed
  • Managing stress or anger
  • Domestic violence and abuse, sexual abuse, mental cruelty
  • Caring for family members with special educational needs, learning difficulties (including ADHD, autistic spectrum disorders, physically challenged clients), or indeed experiencing these conditions yourself
  • Alcohol abuse, substance and drug use, self-harming
  • Emotional eating or food control
  • Personality disorders, either being diagnosed with them or having parents who had these diagnoses

You don't have to be on the list to call me for an informal chat!

I am a member of the BACP and adhere to their ethical guidelines.  I hold professional indemnity insurance.

I have worked offering adult bereavement counselling services for St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham, and have been a youth counsellor in local Harris Academy Schools. I have been in private practice from my home office for five years.  Before I became a counsellor I worked for ten years with young children and their parents, and am acquainted with concerns experienced by the gifted and talented, children with Asperger's, ADHD and ODD, physical challenges, hearing and speech difficulties.

As a carer myself I am passionate about supporting the parents of children with learning difficulties such as Asperger's, autism and ADHD, as they are so often overlooked, and I also value working with individuals with physical challenges. I have personal experience of the trials of mixed race relationships, and also the identity issues of mixed race children.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

Clients sometimes tell me that they have had counselling before but it has not worked for them, and it will not if you cannot reflect on the work we do together and make it relevant to your personal life during the other 167hrs of the week.  I have no magic wands to wave, but can only hope that the insights you make can help you to start to make changes, where before you may have thought that aspects of your life were beyond your control.

It is my hope to support you through this challenging time, and encourage you to make good decisions in your life.

The name of my website is www.talkthinkact.co.uk which I hope reflects what will happen in our meetings;

Talk discussing your concerns in complete confidentiality

Think process events which have happened

Act calmly, assertively and with direction

Do take a look there if you would like to get more of an idea about me and my training, and please feel comfortable to make that call.
