About me

For the past 20 years I have had the privilege of working closely with adults, children and young people going through many kinds of challenges and difficult feelings. When working with my clients I start from a position which values their uniqueness; together we take a fresh look at how they, as a unique person, have arrived at where they are today; how they feel about it; what they would like tomorrow to bring; and how they might go about making any change happen.

I am a qualified and experienced Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and a full member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), operating to its strict ethical code. I am also a qualified Play and Creative Arts Therapist, and Clay Therapist, and offer these therapies in addition to 'talking therapy' if the client wishes. I have worked as a therapist with children, young people and adults in the public sector and with youth and womens' charities. I have my own practice in Central Cambridgeshire.

I am committed to helping my clients discover their own way forward, in a relationship which is neither judgmental nor directive. The client is always at the centre of this relationship, the agenda is always yours: whether the issue relates to your life as it is now, or is something with roots in your past.

Whilst my clients have a very wide range of reasons for coming to me, I have a particular interest and experience in working with families that include a child with special needs and/or a member with autism.

Training, qualifications & experience

My original training was primarily psychodynamic: this includes the understanding that many of our feelings and behaviours as adults are the result of beliefs and ways of seeing ourselves and the world that we are not consciously aware of, often rooted in our childhood experiences.

My training also included strong elements of the person-centred approach and some cognitive behavioural therapy. More recently I qualified in Play and Creative Arts Therapy, and offer my clients the option to explore and express themselves not only through talking, but also through a range of activities including creative sand tray work and arts and crafts; the choice is always yours, and the mixture can be as unique as you are!

I have over 20 years experience working in an advisory and supportive role with families with a young child with special needs, and am a qualified teacher of children with autism and general special needs. In addition, I have worked as a counsellor at a resource centre for women, and with the YMCA counselling service for young people.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Wheelchair access is possible but may need assistance
