Rupert Spiers (MSc Psychotherapist UKCP Accredited)
I am a UKCP accredited Gestalt Psychotherapist currently working in Edinburgh. I have been working as a psychotherapist since 2010. I have experience working in a range of settings, including NHS adult mental health services, higher education and the third sector. In addition, I have many years experience managing therapy and community services for those with physical and cognitive disabilities and specifically survivors of brain injury.
What is Gestalt?
For me, Gestalt therapy offers a refreshingly different way of relating to yourself, your environment and other people. Gestalt therapy aims to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, beliefs and values in order to develop your awareness of how you present yourself and respond to events in your environment. This creates the opportunity to identify choices, patterns of behaviour and obstacles that are impacting on your health and well-being, and preventing you from reaching your full potential.
I see my task as a therapist to help you see more clearly what your situation is, find out how you are a part of it and experiment with finding new solutions or ways to face your difficulties.
Gestalt therapy is considered particularly valuable for helping to treat a wide range of psychological issues - especially as it can be applied as a brief and focused approach or long-term therapy. It has been found effective for managing tension, anxiety, addiction, post-traumatic stress, depression and other psychological problems that can prevent people from living life to the full. Overall, people who participate in gestalt therapy tend to feel more self-confident, calm and at peace with themselves.
