The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them. (Ralph Nichols)
The process of the therapeutic relationship, including attentive listening without judgement is central to my work. Counselling is an opportunity to understand ourselves better. We often forget the answers to our unhappiness can be found within ourselves. From understanding come new opportunities to learn and practise new skills, make new choices and the ability to create more of what we want in our lives.
I have been working as a counsellor/psychotherapist for the last twelve years, the last six years in Cornwall, the place of my birth. I am fortunate to live in West Penwith with my husband, dog and cat where we enjoy walking the cliffs and spending time at the ancient sites in our spare time.
During my twelve years as a therapist I have worked in many areas, including addictions, mental health, abuse, relationship issues, self harm, bereavement and adoption. I set up and facillitated support groups for people recovering from addictions enabling them to gain confidence and skills to lead more fulfilling lives. I have enjoyed working in all these areas and am happy to work with any issue you wish to bring. I see myself as experienced, flexible, open minded and warm offering a gentle, creative person centred therapeutic approach.
Perhaps you currently need support in dealing with stress or anxiety around loosing your job, a partner, your home, or even you sense of direction? Sometimes life can seem to "overwhelm" us and it is difficult to work our way through the fog. It requires courage to look directly and honestly into who we are. Yet when we do, we find a richness of aliveness waiting to be re-discovered. We can learn that our vulnerabilities are our strength.
Sometimes making that first move towards seeking support can be the hardest, therefore if you would like to discuss how I work or have any other questions please feel free to call me.
