How I work
Longer term psychotherapy
My orientation and training is as an Integrative psychotherapist, and my work draws on psychodynamic, existential and transpersonal models. In my longer term psychotherapy work I am drawn to the work of Carl Jung, his insights and teachings. I believe one of the aims of Counselling and Psychotherapy is to address imbalance in one's life or psyche.
In practice I help clients better understand the cycle of patterns in their lives which cause distress, and help facilitate insight into the roots of this thinking or behaviour. I also draw of creative techniques; visualisation and the clients dreams for example, and with the goal to make this exciting work accessible to the broadest range of people. My work is always focussed on balancing facilitating insight and enabling change throughout the process. I believe my work offers a containing and encouraging frame for my clients on their journey.
I have additional training in working with relationship issues, couples and psycho sexual work, which means that one of my long term practice specialism is working with clients who bring relationship based difficulties. This could mean relationship problems with a partner, negative or sabotaging relationship to oneself or someone experiencing sexual difficulties.
Short term solution focussed work
This is aimed at clients who might be seeking a specific change in an area of their life clearly identified or to change a behaviour which is causing distress such as an obsession, block in their life or an addiction.
My orientation is mainly drawn from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Transactional Analysis models. I also draw from modern texts such as the Chimp Paradox which provides fantastic insight and practical exercises the client can undertake. The work is clearly defined and the sessions are more active to help the client achieve a change in behaviour and tips / techniques to ensure this is sustained.
With my experience and training I can offer something different
In addition to my 10 years experience in practice as a qualified psychotherapist, I have held several management roles, and currently, I hold the post as CEO at a leading counselling and counselling training provider in the South East called The Counselling Foundation (www.counsellingfoundation.org). I am responsible for the oversight of the day to day management of work at the Foundation, strategic development as well as commercial and financial oversight.
Both my clinical training and leadership experience from my senior management work, enables me to offer a unique insight and perspective into this work. I work with a client in a way that is sensitive and responsive to the client needs, and also very much focussed increasing emotionally resilient and personal effectiveness, so that their is increased confidence in the client experiencing the change or fulfilment they wish to have in their lives.
Working with business professionals and making counselling relevant
For some clients who work in business or professionals, I draw on coaching techniques which they may feel familiar with and to make the process of counselling more accessible to them. I am uniquely placed to understand the day to day issues professional clients face, whether in the work place, home-life or social sphere. I have supported high performing individuals and business professionals who are seeking to improve their business or leadership skills, but might not have felt comfortable with counselling / therapy. I can make this work relevant to their lives to support managing a career based problems which may also reflect concerns in their personal life. Client feedback is that I am approachable, I use minimal therapy language jargon and I am focussed on enabling change. My website has testimonials and mini case studies check this out at www.robertcumingtherapy.co.uk

Training, qualifications & experience
Interest in the creative processes
I have particular interest in working with clients to help them access and realise the potential of their creativity. In today’s pressured environment, we are taught to rationalise and intellectualise our problems, often ignoring our inner creative resources in overcoming challenges. During structured sessions, we can work to decode dreams as well as explore the conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings in writing, symbols and art.
I also work with meditation techniques which can prove a helpful tool for clients who suffer from anxiety, or as a way of building space into one's life, and help gain greater reflection and more effective decision making.
Other associated training
I graduated in 2007 and have undertaken further training in Integrative Psychotherapy, short-term cognitive work including NLP, loss and bereavement counselling, and depression.
