About me

I am a UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) registered psychotherapist and recognised supervisor. I have an MA in ‘Core Process’ psychotherapy, am a member of the ACPP (Association of Core Process Psychotherapists) and am also a member of the Awen Foundation, from whom I have a Diploma.

I work with individuals on a one-to-one basis from my Cardiff practice. I believe my clients enjoy my holistic approach, which is engaged and creative. Though secular in practice, my approach is informed by spiritual understandings.

The effectiveness of the way I work lies in how creative engagement with both body and mind enables clients to make their own discoveries. My ways of working are spontaneous and about the challenge of stepping into the unknown together. This helps keep the work fresh and alive, frequently leaving client - and myself - in awe of how the enquiry unfolded. I offer a very different psychotherapeutic experience, and find clients frequently express sentiments such as “When I began this work, I never imagined I’d find myself working like this!"

I see my becoming personally engaged with and affected by the work as being essential to the therapeutic process, enabling me to support and guide enquiry. I find inspiration in the sentiment of psychotherapist Emanuel Berman "the image of the wild therapist can serve us... as the image of the deeply involved, personally motivated therapist.....the opposite of the 'civilised' therapist who uses well-divined existing paths, takes no personal risks, and therefore stays at an emotional distance from his/her clients.”

I am a former photographer, and a Buddhist practitioner of over 10 years. I enjoy spending time in wild places such as the sea and mountains. Coming to this work through my own experience, I understand how, paradoxically, difficulty can be the gateway that enables us to lead more fulfilling lives.

If you would like to find out more about whether I, and the ways that I work, might be helpful to you, you are welcome to contact me to arrange a free initial meeting.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) registered psychotherapist and UKCP recognised supervisor. I have an MA in ‘Core Process’ psychotherapy, and am a member of the ACPP (Association of Core Process Psychotherapists. I am also a member of the Awen Foundation, from whom I have a Diploma.

Core Process psychotherapy is a 'psycho-spiritual' psychotherapy that embraces mindfulness and mindful enquiry. It falls under the humanistic umbrella of psychotherapies recognised by the UKCP (Humanistic and Integrative College (HIPC)).

Through the Awen Foundation, much of my ongoing professional development is committed to an ongoing exploration of how the imaginal supports enquiry, and how these remarkable territories can help us find heartfelt meaning for feelings and emotions that might otherwise remain inexplicable. These territories are wide-ranging, and help keep the work spontaneous and alive, so that my approach is continually evolving, rather than falling into the dryness of over used methods and techniques.

I have been engaged in an on-going spiritual enquiry for much of my adult life. This has included regular Buddhist silent retreats in the Chan tradition, and in more recent years Western Mystical approaches informed by the Kabala, and also deep studies of Egyptology and Celtic Mythology. These practice naturally enrich and inform my professional work.

Through both my work and my on-going enquiry, I have come to trust the space where, by simply sitting with the alchemical tension of incongruence, working within the realms of the imaginal, a wisdom that is something much more than what we are will inspire enquiry.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

My work naturally encompasses a wide spectrum of issues and therapeutic areas. However, rather than fall into a reductive process of labelling 'conditions' and 'disorders', my approach is to engage with the whole person who is experiencing difficulty, in a way that brings more holistic understanding and self acceptance.

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

I believe in the richness of face-to-face work, and post pandemic only offer occasional remote sessions to clients under negotiated circumstances.
